"Added an additional selection to the "Steal space from Extras" menu. You can now decide to steal only 10% in addition to 25%, 33%, and 50%."

Perhaps even more useful would be something like "...but never less than 2000KBps (or other bitrate of choice)". Every once in a while I get an extra that RB has cut to 800 or so---and it's so bad that it is essentially un-watchable.

Because what I really want is "reduce extras as much as possible, without cutting the bitrate below an adaquate floor."

Knowing the average bitrate for video you can then choose the right "Steal space from Extras" setting to your needs.

I would recomend the Half D1 and Half Space for Extras instead o the Steal....
With Hald D1 you reduce the bitrate needed to keep a good quality by half, as there are just a half of the pixels

This is similar to the technique used in VCDs and SVCDs to make watchables videoas with very low bitrate.

It is a question of taste

And how much do you value the main movie vs the extras.

Some people just get rid of extras
Some people keeps them at the same bitrate as original
Same people, as myself, like to keep them but not at the expense of lowering main movie below the 3500 bitrate

And I suggested the technique to get a "watchable" extra at 800 bitrate.

Of course, what is watchable depends upon oneself

How does one find out what the average bitrate is before encoding with DVDRB?

And then what formulas or guidelines would one implement to figure out how much Steal Space to use?

No need to do a recode. You get this info with the log of the Prepare phase.

After the Prepare you get all details about bitrate and percentage reduction with the beta viewer/editor, and you can adjust the bitrate of each segment individually, as you like, before starting the Encode.

I usually set the bitrate of the Extras to 2600 .... 2700 kbps which normally delivers acceptable quality for Extras, to my taste.

Hi Sharc,
Oh, I see. I have been using 1 click usually. I'll try 3 click and check that out.

I hope there a way after checking the Prepare phase to go to a mode that takes it the rest of the way including Burn with ImgBrn from there. That makes it easy to do the work overnight. Cheers.

You can just click on REBUILD and it will finish the ENCODE/REBUILD job (two click). You can also run it as a batch encode by selecting "Skip PREPARE Phase in Batch" before saving the project.
