Reason I am asking is-i uninstalled latest real player because of crash while using-found couldn't load rmvb files via avisynth.
Reinstalled the player and presto-rmvb files could be loaded again via avisynth.
Which means that if you install latest Real Media player-you do not need to install real media splitter?

no, you must have had realmediasplitter.ax on your system all the time.

if i understood correctly if you have realplayer and the splitter you can watch real files like .rmvb on other software.
if you have real alternative on the other hand, you can watch it without installing realplayer.
i may be wrong
correct me if i am

If you have real player-esy to make HFE work-that's a more than good enough reason to have it installed. The splitter and decoders allow you to watch on any other player and to use avisynth for frameserving.
I am still wondering what was uninstalled when Real Player was uninstalled, and what was reinstalled when Real Player was reinstalled.

why is Real Alternative evil?
I also use Quicktime alternative. Is that evil too? Why?

Codec packs not exactly evil, just illegal to distribute, in the same category as warez, thus a violation of forum rules to discuss. And they have been known to cause installation woes and system trouble. Good summary here:

Realmediasplitter is not a codec pack. It does not include any codecs by itself, but uses the codecs as they are installed on the system.

Yes, thanks karl_lillevold. I just thought they had spyware or such things. I know they are illegal.
