Here's something similar to the thing I'm trying to solve:
http://home.comcast.net/~davetest/Untitled-1.jpg

It's a smooth gradient , created in Photoshop, but because of the
jpg compression, the banding is apparent.

Is anybody aware of any filter that may mitigate this effect,
and reduce the banding? I see the same thing in various avi's
I have, presumably they're there for the same reason. A little too
much compression.
cheers,
Dave

I don't know of any Virtuldub filter that will do what you want.

There is, perhaps, an AviSynth script that may help you here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=87755&highlight=colorbanding)

You can apply the blur filter, it will smooth the gradient.

Aside from a dumb smoothing kernel, the filter blockbuster comes to mind. I really can't speak to its efficacy though.
