I have heard that there are DVD burners that work through "cyclic redundancy errors" on thier own when making a backup copy DVD. I thought only the software could fix this problem during a copy session. If there are burners that do this, what brand are they and how do they work?

I would like to know about this too

I have had CRC errors on reading my crap Vivastar discs when trying to copy files off of them to my computer. They were all bought in the same batch on a spindle as unbranded :( . I now have a setup where I have two CD writers, one being a LG GMA-4020b and the other being an Emprex (seemingly BTC) DRW1016IM and some of my crappy Vivastar mdeia that was burnt in the last 2 1/2 years now only reading fully correctly in one of the drives but not both. I have had a long saga with this shite Vivastar media (documented in a couple of other threads) and the newer Emprex drive recognises and reads some discs, and the LG likewise, but with some of these discs it's a case of they will not be recognised in both drives only one or the other not both, - they were all written in the LG drive.

but the cyclical redundancy check data error is the main error message that occurs, but often if that is in one drive, the other will slowly read it and copy the file. Some info: I do keep my discs clean, I have tried silver polish on the discs and this has helped rescue a couple of my discs to make them readable again.

But my general query is:
We know that CDs and DVDs has some kind of Error Correction written when data is burnt to it, so can this info be used to resuce data which has an unreadable sector? i.e. the Error correction data is supposed to tell what data was meant to be there right? Some kind of MD5 type hash?

Thanks for any information and help :)

At this time I don't have an answer for you. I have gotten no responses to my thread. I have had one person say that different brands and models of burners recognize errors and play through them but thats all I know. Only other suggestion is a software program like DVD Rescue for data recovery.
Let me know if you find more info reguarding this issue.
Thanks
