need codec for capturing

i need a codec for capturing VHS video tape, with:
- minimum drop frame
- high quality
- fast endcoding rate
- low filesize

what's your suggestion?

Nice list of wishes...

Some notes: fast codec will ensure that you will have not dropped frames because of codec. But will not ensure that you will not have dropped frames - it depends much from capturing programm, used colorspace, card and of course condition of VHS tape.

If you'd read guides, you'd know what codecs are suitable for capture...

I will not say Mjpeg because it's not free, and I assume that you want it free, although it is not in list :D

Here's my two cents............The fastest codecs I have found

#1 Leadtools MJPEG $9.95 US (Most flexable) Should be free demo there for you to test.

#2 Panasonic DV codec (VFW) (FREE)..........Yes It allows you to capture analog video with all most any analog card in DV format, will work with VD and VirtualVCR

Recogmend using VirtualVCR for capturing.

Don't use DV-Codecs for Capture-Cards, because all capture devices are working in YUV4:2:2-Colorspace, not YV12. With DV-Codecs, you will loss quality even before you startet filtering/encoding. And capturing interlaced source in YV12 is... nearly a crime. ;)

Give ffdshow a try (MJPEG or HuffYUV)

Also Panasonic DV only accepts RGB24 input (even though it stores in YV12), works only with 720x576 (480) and some other fixed resolutions and isnt fast at all last time I tested it.
