I'm trying to backup my DVD set of Deadwood Season 1 using AutoGK.

I set it to a fixed size of 1/3 DVD-R (which is about 1.4gb)

The strange part, is that it won't encode the segmants (50 minutes in length) to any larger than about 1.1 or 1.2gb.

I took a closer look at the log, and it is returning huge compressability values (like 230, 240, etc) for the episodes.

Does this mean AutoGK is hitting the maximum size and quality?

Doesn't seem like it should be hitting that upper limit at about 24mb per minute, or 400 KB per second.

Yes, you even should see in the logs something like "warning - final avi will be undersized".

No such warning in this one for example. It was supposed to encode to 1490mb and the result was 1.19gb or 1,285,183,488 bytes.

Here's the log:

Its DivX, so I can't check compressibility after first pass, so the only indication is comp test value that should not be above 100 if you want exact target size.

Interesting, I tried re-doing it in XviD even before posting here, and it crashed. At the time I wrote it off as unrelated. I wonder if there's something weird with the source. I'll try again in XviD and get back to you.

I should add, that the resulting undersized AVI still looks amazing.

of course it would as its 100% quality...

You'll notice that if you were to extract the vob's for the actual episode on the DVD -- they are only around the 1.5GB mark with AC3 audio. That's the RAW mpeg2.

If you're wanting to make a "perfect" copy just enter "100%" as you desired percentage and it will make the file as big (or as little) as it needs to, to achieve it.

Naw man, the vobs are like 3.6gb each 50 minute episode. There are only 2 per disc (DVD9s)

I'll probably re-encode them at 100% - faster too, cause it only needs 1 pass.

Agreed, it will be a lot faster.

Ya, I just took a look at disc 3 and the whole disc extraction is 7.35GB, an average of 2.45GB an episode. I guess I was just used to (for example Nip/Tuck.... those eps are around the 1.6GB mark. Must be a higher bitrate on those Deadwood episodes ;)

Cheers,
