is there a program that can show me what encoder was used to encode mpeg2 video(namely dvd video)?

does that mean no?

Generally, no.
In fact any prog that can analyse mpeg files can give info about the encoder used, ONLY IF the encoder leave specific info or sign in the encoded material (AFAIK TMPG does this).

you might have a look at restream, which can read the user data portion of an mpeg2 stream. Tmpgenc does add text to this, but thats the only encode i can think of that does.

I just checked GSpot and Restream (Thanks liquid217 for the link) against 2 VOBs, one from an original DVD and the other created using DVDReBuilder+CCE. In both cases, none of these tools gave any indication as to what was the encoder used (at least to my eyes).
So just in case you were planning to download a VOB sample from a P2P network and check whether it was done with DVDShrink or DVDRebuilder, you are out of luck.:D

there is an anciliary (user) data chunk in the sequence header. some tool fill that in, some not. If it's filled in, then it can be displayed otherwise not. Not so much trustable, because any software what is processing the stream may change it. a lots of dvd auth software replaces this chunk text with its own...

Load the DVD into DVDInfoPro. The information displayed for the DVD will tell you if DVD Shrink made it.

I just checked a disc. It is the Implementation ID. It comes up as DVDShrink.
