Hello,

I finally tweaked the settings appropriately to backup The Pianist... the output looks fine in PowerDVD when I view the DVD in File Mode. However when I go to make the ISO (I use DVD Shrink just to check up on the structure and make sure everything's cool), DVD Shrink complains that the file:

<path>/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB

is not found. I just checked, and in the RB Source directory, there is a VTS_01_1.VOB, but not in the final output directory. I have never had this problem before... the last four or five times I used Rebuilder on this very same movie with the very same source folder, Shrink was able to read the final output correctly.

I can only help but think it is different this time because when I went to prepare, I first aborted the prepare (to change a setting) then ran prepare again. I assumed prepare would re-do the prep phase from the start.

Anyone have any clue what could have caused this? I don't want to re-encode another 4 hours only to find the same problem. Very weird -- I know I must have done something wrong.

edit: copying VTS_01_1.VOB from the RB Source directory seemed to work. It's just a 10KB file, but I must have done something to screw up RB that this time it didn't create it in the Final output folder on its own.

See the release notes for the latest release. (You can read them in the "Rebuilder Versions" sticky.)

Thanks. What is 100% ILVU content?

Funny, I thought I ran the encode after upgrading to 0.83, but maybe not! I assume it's ok if I just copy the file from the source directory into the output one?

Ok, this is definitely still occurring in DVD-RB Pro 0.83.

I just ran an encode on Whale Rider Region1 NTSC. The output directory is missing a little VTS_02_1.VOB.

I am blanking these titles (studio logos, etc.) in DVD Remake Pro -- but never had this problem in previous versions of RB.

Used 0.83 Pro - 2 files missing on Pokemon: Destiny Deoxys - VTS_01_1.VOB and VTS_02_1.VOB.
Went back to 0.82 Pro on same movie - everything worked fine.
I did not use anything to preprocess it like Shrink or Remake.
Also noticed that rebuilding 300 Spartans with 0.82 Pro I lost all subtitles except English but I wanted to keep all of them.

The subtitle issue is apparently fixed in 0.83, so that shouldn't be a problem. But this new titles gone missing issue definitely needs looking at. I'm sure jdobbs can fix it instantly as soon as he gets a chance to look at it.

Believe I have found what might be the problem. If you use Any DVD or any program to rip to hard drive that deletes playback of vmg menu items, FBI screens etc.(Jump directly to Main menu or Title Menu setting), it alters the original .ifo file. I don't know enough about the specifics, but I have noticed the same behavior. When doing a little research, I noticed that the titles being left out of the processing mode and therefore rebuild stage were all ones that might be affected by this change. I am going to try the project with the original .ifo(AnyDVD turned off) and see if the results are the same.

A general comment: See jdobbs' many comments regarding preprocessing - that definitely counts as preprocessing.

Spazz, thanks for that observation. It's probably on the money. These last movies (two of them) that I've tried in 0.83 Pro definitely did have FBI warnings and such that were ripped out (by me) in DVD Remake, so there was definite pre-processing going on.

I am very aware of jdobbs' comments regarding pre-processing. I am not automatically assuming this is a bug/feature of DVD-RB.

However, I have been preprocessing films in this fashion for quite a while now, and 0.82 Pro never had a single hiccup of this type. So I can only assume that either 0.83 is being more stringent/compliant, or something may have changed that jdobbs would agree to change back.

I hope he will take pity on us pre-processing fans and look into it. I know I can blank things in RB itself now, but there's just something so clean about removing buttons that link to menus and removed titles. It feels much more... professional.

Just wanted to point out that khrian apparently experienced this problem but did not preprocess his source.

The only way I could imagine DVD-RB could miss a VOB is if someone removed the IFO file for that VTS. Does your source have VTS's with no IFO file (it shouldn't)?

raddygast

My source has ifo files for every VTS. In this case (Whale Rider), the VOB that went missing was VTS_02_1.VOB.

I checked the source dir, and there is a VTS_02_0.IFO. The IFO is in the output dir too; the only thing missing is VTS_02_1.VOB (although VTS_02_0.VOB is there)

I'm sure we can lick this problem -- but you probably need more info from me. Just ask me what you need and I can send you any rebuilder log files, directory listings, etc.

All ifo are in Source folder. only common denominator is somehow VMG menu. If they are referenced in VMG menu, they get left out of rebuild. Ifo gets copied to output folder, but Vob does not. I have all logs in question if it would help. This has happened with all 0.83 projects I have run so far. Including ones that 0.82 had no problem with. Finding Neverland, Stepford Wives, etc.

Problem is definately in 0.83. Just did rebuild only with 0.82 of project run with 0.83 and all files get copied to output folder.

Just a question here Spazz, and this is slightly off topic to solving the problem, but can I just copy the missing VOB file from the source dir to the output dir so I can burn my DVD's? It seems to work fine (playback is ok in PowerDVD) but I want to avoid any weird set-top DVD player incompatibilities. These small titlesets aren't being encoded anyway, I think, since they are just tiny bits of blank content.

Let someone smarter than me answer that, but when checking output files with ifo edit, rebuilder is allowing for sectors properly, just not copying files.

SpazzHH

(Update) Same result with original IFO. Using 0.83, the files get left out. If you rebuild with 0.82, You get all files included.

Ok, so just to clarify, it seems that preprocessing is not the cause of this error, as khrian and Spazz have reproduced the problem with the original non-AnyDVD non-vobblanked non-dvdremade material.

Spazz -- have you noticed anything else peculiar? I just realized that not only was I missing VTS_02_1.VOB and VTS_06_1.VOB in the output dir, but my main feature ended up 200 MB undersized. This is probably totally unrelated, but I always bump up targetsectors to 225xxxxxx, so if anything I should be flirting with oversize. Only thing I did different this time was to select MPEG Standard for the main feature matrix.

Did your projects go through with fairly accurate predictions?

Could someone please post the two directories of one of these cases of missing files? I'd like to see a listing of the source directory and a listing of the output (VIDEO_TS) directory.

Thanks.

What the hell kind of DVD is this????

There are 23 VTSs (02-22) that all have exactly the same size IFO and VOB file sizes???

Has this been edited (preprocessed) before being inserted in the source directory? It sure looks like there has been a lot of replacement of VOBs with some fixed value...

<sigh>

I mentioned early on that I edited out a bunch of extras in DVD Remake Pro, but also pointed out that khrian and SpazzHH have confirmed this issue with completely unedited content in the source directory. If you like, I could try running RB with the same movie but with untouched content straight from the ISO ripped with DVDD.

It's a weird title, granted -- each extra has its own titleset. What I did was in DRM Pro, I "hide all blocks" for basically every one of these titles, which is why they are all small and similar or identical size.

Still, somehow two of the vobs get skipped in the final output.

P.S. The same issue came up with The Pianist, but I have deleted my source and output directories so I can't unfortunately give you a listing.

Please run it through untouched and let me know what happens. I've gone over the code about a hundred times and can't find a reason why one of the .VOB files would be missing.

The routine that copies the VOB files simply looks for any VOB that doesn't have any corresponding ".`AVS" files (indicating it wasn't processed during PREPARE) in the working directory and copies it.

The missing output VOB's(2_1 and 6_1) are the VMG menu items. I wish I could tell you more other than if I do the rebuild with 0.82, they get copied to the output folder, and If I do it with 0.83, they don't. It's not just this DVD for me either. I have run 4 different ones now with the exact same result, no VMG menu VOB gets copied to output folder. I have tried them preprocessed and untouched both, looking for clues, always the same.

BTW - If your wondering, VTS's above(3,4) were blanked with DVD-RB.

I have the same "problem" with a few movies (DVDRB 0.83)

In my case it was a small "language selection menu". Yes it was a
VTS_02_1 vob file not VTS_02_0 (typical menu)

I simply copyed over the file and made a correct VTS sectors.

It worked for me, but with previous versions this has never happened.

Might be a small bug....

Battlestar Galactica 2004 Series One (PAL)
disc #2
DVD-RB 0.83PRO

Same thing here, VTS_02_1.vob is missing from the output. Source was copied to HD with AnyDVD, but I made sure it didn't make any aforementioned changes to .ifo.

Neither of 0.83's new "blanking" features were used. DGDecode.dll is the one which came with 0.83.

VTS_02_1.vob is the Universal logo, which is present in the source directory and plays like it should when testing the data in source dir.

Did disc #1 (data copied to HD using AnyDVD w same settings) with DVD-RB 0.80 and output works perfectly. I'm now re-doing disc #2 with 0.80 from same source data which caused problems with 0.83. I'm also using the same DGDecode.dll as in the previous run - unfortunately I'm unable to tell you which version of DGDecode was used for the successful disc #1 encode.

This could prove to be a nasty bug to stamp out. Good luck and patience to jdobbs!

jdobbs,

I did as you said. Ran it on Whale Rider straight from the ISO mounted virtually with daemon tools.

I used 33% extra reduction. I *did* tweak the settings in RB Opt, but that shouldn't matter, should it? Increased targetsectors to 225xxxxx something thereabouts. Also chose mpeg standard matrix in DVD-RB for main feature.

VTS_02_1.VOB is still missing in the output dir, I suspect VTS_06_1.VOB is also missing (forgot to check, away from main computer atm).

Will post a dir list for you in a few minutes.

NB: I should note that this ISO was ripped with DVD Decrypter, but all checkboxes were selected in ISO Read options (i.e. remove VOB PUOs, remove IFO PUOs, remove protection, etc.)

When I did the Pianist, it was VTS_02_1.VOB missing. With Whale Rider, VTS_02_1.VOB and VTS_06_1.VOB were missing.

I noticed that in some of the posts here, both 2 *and* 6 were also missing. But sometimes it appears that it's just 2.

It's always the VTS_0X_1 that's missing, never the _0 or anything higher.

Thought I'd help by looking up the titles referred to (the movie ones, that is) but there is no apparent pattern:

Paramount Home Video, Universal Studios, Miramax, Columbia Tristar etc.

It's not always VTS_02_X.VOB. That is just a very frequently used format. I have also had just about every other VTS number come up missing, VTS_6, VTS_4, VTS_5. It's not the number. The number has varied, but the affiliation with the VMG menu has been there EVERY time. I know absolute squat about computer programming or how your program works, and you'd be absolutely nuts to take my advice, but I've been rebuilding things with different versions of your software for three days now, almost non-stop, trying to figure out, with what little sense I've got, what's going on and every factor has varied but "VMG Menu item". I wish I had some way of telling you how sorry I am that I can't tell you more. As I stated in the other posts, you can do the rebuild with 0.81, you get 0.81 bugs but all files are in the output folder when your through, regardless of which version you did the project with. You then delete the Output folder. Open 0.82. Perform just the Rebuild Phase. All files are in the output folder. Delete the Folder. Open 0.83, Perform just the Rebuild Phase(yes, I've also done full projects with each version), and every non menu VOB that is part of the VMG Title set is missing from the output folder. It's gotten to the point, I can tell you which ones will be left out before I start the Project if I've never looked at the DVD before.

How can you tell that they are VMG-referenced items? I mean, what are you using to check that out? IFOedit?

I'm trying to learn how to use DRM Pro. If you click on advanced mode, you can check the FirstPlay commands, that usually load a specific VMG Title. Then that title usually has a jump command to a specific VTS, usually VTS2 I think. But in the case that I just described where VTS 2 and 6 were missing, I couldn't figure out how number 6 was related to the VMG.

By the way, jdobbs, when I re-ran the encode on The Pianist with the full unadulterated source, only VTS_02_1.VOB was missing. But when I ran it on my preprocessed source both VTS_02_1.VOB and VTS_06_1.VOB were missing.

Not sure if that helps any.

Have to admit, I am very confused. How do those 8.3 filenames get calculated -- they seem to bear no relation whatsoever to the actual long filename.

From my crude understanding, this 8.3 filename mixup seems to be confusing RB's VOB copying routine, right? It checks the working directory for VOBs without corresponding .AVS files. If there are avs files that begin with V02.... it assumes that it doesn't need to copy the VOB, correct? Then that VOB gets left out. This makes sense because I am missing VTS_02_1 and VTS_06_1, and the above dir listings come up non-empty for those. All other VTS numbers come up empty so their VOBs get copied.

What I can't figure out is why it used to work in 0.82 Pro and before.

yep, m$ is really weird.
1st i'll generate 4 filenames like

V01000~1.AVS
V01000~2.AVS
V01000~3.AVS
V01000~4.AVS

but once the last index reaches 4, next filenames seem to have 4 random characters after the first 2 chars (V0). i'm saying random, since .avs and .flg have different characters even tho the original long name before the extension is exactly the same, but perhaps it's a hash of the whole name:

V0E443~1.AVS V01000400008002.AVS
V09CA2~1.FLG V01000400008002.FLG

Did disc #1 (data copied to HD using AnyDVD w same settings) with DVD-RB 0.80 and output works perfectly. I'm now re-doing disc #2 with 0.80 from same source data which caused problems with 0.83. I'm also using the same DGDecode.dll as in the previous run - unfortunately I'm unable to tell you which version of DGDecode was used for the successful disc #1 encode.

OK, disc #2 is now done with 0.80 using the same source data - and it's perfect. No files missing, menus work etc. I think I'll upgrade to 0.82 and see how it performs.

if lamster is right, you could try to disable the 8.3-filename creation and see, how it goes.

at least for XP that can be done by setting the Registry DWORD key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem\NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation
to 1. after that you need to reboot.

ps, how do i get that to stay on 1 single line? code-tag didn't quite work...

I tried to do "The Cronicles of Riddick" and when I went to burn with Nero, Nero said VOB file 3 was missing. I was using RB 83 Pro. CCE 2.7, and the DGdecode.dll that comes with RB. Avisynth version 2.55. RB was set to do Movie and Menu Only,(extras blank). The file size for movie was 3,5 approx after prepare. Now I did the same thing with RB 84 and the size is now 3,7 approx. I have not complete the encode section for rb 84 yet. The only thing I did in RB 83 Pro before I pressed encode was to use the Video Editor to look at some of the extras that were going to be blanked. I even remember unblanking the extras then reblanking them in the editor. Then I let RB 83 Pro to the Encoding. RB 83 Pro was set to oneclick mode and asked me if I wanted to deleted the files that already existed, so I clicked yes. When I came home from work RB had finished encoding but had not started to rebuild as it had a message saying Files exist do I want to delete them so I clicked Yes again then RB rebuilt and finished. Maybe there is a bug in the way I did things above. Also I think RB should delete both sets of folders in one click mode as soon as you select yes to delete existing file, so you dont some home to find it sat there wait for you to click Yes a second time. :)
This is the second time I had a vob file missing so now I know it's not just me having the problem I will try and take more notice of what I do inthe future and see if I notice a pattern.

We think this is a bug that has been identified, but aren't sure why it only affects 0.83 Pro and beyond.

All we can do now is wait for jdobbs to check this thread again in the morning and see if he can reproduce the problem and then find a fix for it. Shouldn't be long now!

or you can try to switch off the 8.3-name generation...

I was going to try this to further help jdobbs (i.e. prove the issue is with file naming), but I wonder if it can have adverse effects on my system. Any bizarre applications that require 8.3 naming?

hard to tell, but this is what i've seen

Unless you have a good reason for keeping the 8.3 naming convention
intact (such as if you’re using 16-bit programs), a performance gain can
be achieved by disabling it.

obviously, you can always turn it back on, once you've done with the rebuilding.

and please, PLEASE do not blame me, if something goes wrong ;-)

There are lots of them.... I wouldn't disable it without turning it back on. Now that I have some direction to follow... I'll get this fixed today. The reason it started in v0.83 is because I changed it then to counter the "VTSs that were 100% ILVU weren't being copied" problem. Two steps forward, one step back... ;)

Just as a clarification. What operating system and service pack is everyone using who is getting this? XP? It's frustrating me that I can't repeat this... also, is it on a hard drive, network drive, or a mounted ISO?
