Nero Digital vs x264 comparision

Does such comparission exists? What is better to use?

Nero digital is quality wise and speed wise (in some cases) better than x.264 but you're forced to use the Nero Recode GUI.
Subtitles are stored as vobsubs and chapters in a proprietary format.
You can always extract the video and audio streams and remux everything in a more standardized way.
That's the only (big) limitation of Nero Digital.
On the other side x.264 is the opposite. You can use it from VirtualDub(mod) or thru mencoder and it even has it's own CLI, so it can be supported by everything on earth... but it's still in heavy development and lacks some codec features you can find in nerodigital.
My suggestion is: Try both solutions and draw your conclusions.

Honestly I'm very unsecure about the whole H.264-thingy because of all those different codecs you can't be sure they would be supported in the future.
There are some HDTV-vids I'd like to backup to with an h.264-codec but the nero one is too bended and not fully compatible to other players and stuff. Backing up with x264 is unsecure because its still in beta state.

It would be great if someone could post some comparison pics of those 2 codecs.

It's not about posting images quite as of yet. I think once h.264 reaches a level where it supports full AVC standard as defined in bonds nice post *thx bond* about mpeg-4 standards then we can stard doing real world test of their comparative quality. As for playback/features issue I think that nero AVC will always be about going to the standard whereas I think that h.264 will be more of a codec open for quality improvement much as xvid did over divx. We'll see what the future has in store for us.

That's why there's things like MPEGIF Interoperability WG which definitely is a good thing to have:

Don't know about x264 though..

Does anybody read "Nero Recode" logs after encoding? There are string "Adaptive compress:false", "Advanced analyss:false". Anybody know what this strings mean?

But would support the whole Mp4 ( H.264 ) standard further improve the quality? If so why don't they do it?

Ed: Did a little search and came up nothing... Which profile does the current Nero AVC belongs to?

It can do baseline ( it misses some features, but those are useless for DVDRip / backups ), and main ( it misses interlacing support ).
