decoding probs with xvid encoded video...

i had encoded this dvd using xvid (not sure which version) some time back .. not sure i have checked it before .. i have this bad habit of encoding stuff & leavin it there without even lookin at it once ..

anyways now when i playback half of it is weird/blocky in all the players .. i dont know what to call this effect .. it happens with some videos when i skip it forward, but this is the first time it happens when i playback .. when i open in virtualdub & fool around virtualdub crashes .. is it possible its a problem with the decoder or a problem while encoding it ?

im pasting an image of it .. if required i can put up the bin file extract of the video from gspot ..

ps: i still cant playback div3 low-motion even after going thru the extensive sticky on it ..

hmm... this very much looks like a corrupted video file to me. in that case there is not much you can do, except do a reencode from scratch... you might want to try such method like direct stream copy in vdub and divFix, but don't expect too much from it.

another possibility would be that you have a faulty codec setup. to fix this you would have to uninstall more or less all your video codecs and then install one after another and see if it fixes the problem...

actualy if that is what you get when placing it in your dvd player it maybe due to the fact that you encoded your xvid with either Qpel or GMC which most dvd/divx player don't support.

I for one have the DVP642 and i had a movie that played like that, so i converted to divx and it wrkd great.

you however need .NET framework.
After opening the video click video info and beside Qpel or GMC it should say yes.

As far as QPEL goes, what you said is incorrect. If you try to play an XviD file encoded with QPEL, the DVP642 will output a warning 'Codec not supported (QPEL)' and won't play it at all. I haven't tried with GMC though, but it is safe to assume that the result might be similar.

As far as getting garbled picture goes, I hope you know about the bug in DVP642 which sometimes causes that. When that happens, you have to press the 'System Menu' button twice on your remote and it should work fine. This bug should be fixed in the next firmware update, but till then this is a quick and dirty method to get around it.

This particular picture is a .jpg; I doubt therefore it's a "capture" from a standalone. So the GMC/QPEL discussion is academic, only.
