View Full Version : Is this the correct way to back up to DVD+R DL using ISO read/write option?

Ok I finally got a 3 pack of Verbatim DVD+R DL blanks. I want to back up my first dual layered DVD. I just want to make sure I do it right, because as most of us know, these blanks are still pretty expensive. I want to back-up the disc exactly, however, I want to remove the restrictions the original has (Like being able to access the menu whenever I want, skip over the FBI warnings, etc.) I am going to use DVD Decrypter version 3.5.4.0, and I want to use the ISO read option. My settings in the ISO Read Mode are as follows: File Splitting:Auto, DVD+RW Capacity:File System. I have checked Create MDS File, Remove IFO RC Protection, Remove IFO RCE Protection and Remove IFO PUOs. I have left unchecked Remove IFO Structure Protection and Remove VOB PUOs. In the ISO Write Mode, the options I've set are as follows: Write Mode:Auto, Write Type:SAO, Link Size: Auto. I have checked Enable Burn-Proof, Lock Volume-Exclusive Access, and Cycle Tray Before Verify. Everything else is unchecked. Also in Layer Break For Dual Media, I have checked Calculate Optimal. Can someone please confirm that these settings will produce an exact back-up of the original, with the only difference being that I will be able to skip through the FBI warnings, and will be able to access the Menu without having to wait for whatever restrictions were on the original? Thanks for your help guys!

Carlos, by now I'm sure you have burned a DL disc or two, and perhaps you no longer desire a response to this, but I noticed your post and have comments for you cuz I have been working with the same Verbatim blanks recently.
First, I have not compared your DVD Decrypter settings to my own, but I use DVDD with default settings to make ISOs and burn them again and this of course works just fine.
Regarding your interest to avoid warnings, I have a particular irritation with Universal DVDs, which not only start with the FBI warning but also have "trailers" before you can get to the main menu. What a pain to have to skip-forward to the menu! I do not think DVDD alone can help with this, as it's not the PUOps that are the problem, it is the disc structure which determines what-plays-in-what-order.
So what I do (now) successfully with these discs is this:
1. Rip w/DVDD to ISO. This always protects the original files in case I screw something up (don't want to have to re-rip of course).
2. Tweak w/DVD Shrink if needed, or if not, just Backup as a file set, remembering to un-check Shrink's "Remove Layer Break" option. There is also a setting to tell Shrink you're working with a DL disc BTW.
3. In the resulting file set, edit the disc's IFO file with IfoEdit to make the disc "Jump to Title" instead of its normal startup routine. How to do this is explained here (http://ifoedit.wh.fr0zen.com/splitprob1.html#moviestart)
4. Burn the edited VIDEO_TS set to DVD using RecordNow 7.3 (in Data mode), which retains the original layer break.
You had said you wanted to jump to the main title, not the movie, but I'm sure IfoEdit would let you do that as well. I had read a number of good things about RN 7.2/7.3 and invested $30 in the Deluxe version; I'm happy with it so far, having done the above a couple times and burned ISOs as well, though of course DVDD does a fine job for free if all you need to do is back-up the DL disc "as-is".
p.s. Best deal on RN Deluxe is here (http://www.digitalriver.com/dr/v2/ec_MAIN.Entry10?V1=641139&PN=1&SP=10023&xid=8282&CID=0&DSP=&CUR=840&PGRP=0&CACHE_ID=0)

An alternative, you might consider:
1. Using PgcEdit's Kill Playback feature on FBIs and trailers. This does nothing to the VOBs and so preserves the disk.
2. Using 2COOL's JMP2PGC (available on the PgcEdit homepage), to jump to the main menu or the title as you prefer. This, again does nothing to the disk.
3. Burning with DVD Decrypter.
