I've been going back through some of the inexplicable errors and have found that most of the ones related to CCE encoding failures (such as the infamous "MPVA VBF ovf frame #" and the resulting DVD-RB error "ERROR: Encoder failed to create .M2V. Aborted." -- even some of the "Runtime 9" or "0006" errors) seem to be caused by exceptionally low bitrates on very small segments. I've also noted that the latest version of CCE won't allow you to enter a minimum bitrate less than 500Kbs...
So, getting to the point, I recommend that anyone experiencing any of these problems add the following line to his/her REBUILDER.INI file under the [Options] area:
MIN_BITRATE=500
On DVD-RB versions 0.83 and above this will become the default value.
Thanks,

Done Thanks!

yes, thanks...and I hope I never have to go that low.
hmmm, what does 500kbs look like on an encode? :scared:

8th April 2005, 20:40
actually, on a still, it can be bareable
jdobbs
8th April 2005, 23:44
The 500K is the setting for the minimum of what the AVERAGE bitrate can be for a segment (as well as the setting for the VBR minimum). There are LOTS of instances where 500Kbs is more than enough. Think of blank space or a screen that never changes (but isn't a still).

when you say default in next version (0.83) do you mean hard coded into the app itself or default written to the ini file ?
cus i have the 0.83 pro rls and that vaule isnt in the ini
Sir Didymus
11th April 2005, 11:25
It is the new default value for this parameters; it means that it is embedded in the application and it is applied when no MIN_BITRATE line is present into the Rebuilder.ini file.
If such a MIN_BITRATE line is present, it overrides this new default.
Hope it is clear...
Cheers,
SD

I just ran into the "Runtime error 9. Subscript out of range." error for the first time. I'm using v0.74 right now, if I can fix this I figured I'd just wait until 0.83 was public and upgrade to that. I want to make sure I know what to do to apply this fix.
I open the rebuilder.ini file, and under section [Options] (or [CCE Options]?) I write in that line, but where? At the top of the list, the bottom, in alphabetical order? Or doesn't it matter?

Sorry but this doesnt fix the problem for me, I use the 0.82.1 free version, and I still get the Run Time Error 9.
I use VobBlanker to reduce the size of Extra and i read in the forum that small size block can cause this problem, so how to avoid this error.
Thx

What version are you using? There was an "Error 9" fix that went into v0.85.
virtual_francky
17th April 2005, 19:28
Ok just register and tested with the 0.85 Pro version and I have the same error so it doesnt seems to be what you where thinking about.
The message appears as soon as I launch the encoding with the 1 click method, the same message appears with the 3 click version just after pressing prepare, so I think it surely does have with avisynth.
The program works great with orginal DVD that doesnt have been reduce using VobBlanker.
Will try other thing, if you need some information about my configuration just ask.
I use CCE SP trial Version 2.67.00.27 with EdCCE V1.81.

Could you specify the DVD you are working and exactly what you removed with VobBlanker? I hope it's NTSC R1 so I can get a test copy.
virtual_francky
17th April 2005, 19:55
I'm working with " Sky Captain and the world of tomorrow" NTSC DVD Zone 1.
With VobBlanker I remove every thing except The Menu, VTS_01_0.VOB because if I blank it to I get a message saying Missing VTS_01 file and of course the movie.
I now try to encode using the mode keep only menu and movie and blank extra and other vob in the 0.85 Pro version to see what I get.
virtual_francky
18th April 2005, 23:23
Ok I have tried different settings with the 0.85 Pro edition but I have another error message the infamous:
"Error 0006: DVD-RB has found an inconsistency in source data between the PREPARE and REBUILD phases. Aborting."
I try to encode the same movie without blanking it with VobBlaker but using the Menu and movie only option in DVD-RB
The message appear on the VTS_05_0.vob wich is the first vob of the movie. I reencode the movie using the 2.67 Trial version of CCE with EdCCE 1.81. I ve tried to change Decoder to DGDECODE.dll suggested in the forum but still no chance to get the movie rebuild after the encoding.
Please does anyone has an idea, beacaus I m completly lost, each try ended with this error, I m going to ive a try with another DVD to see what happens.
Thx

Is that happening just with that DVD or with all?
How did you installed Rebuilder?

I'm now trying with another DVD to see if I have the same result.
For the installation I have tested two methods, the frits one with Rockas installer and writting over the dvd-rb executable with the 0.85 pro version.
The second one only using the files ins the 0.85 version that come in the zip version.
Thx for the interest.

Ok I tried with another DVD during the night with the same option ( menu and movie only + CCE encoding ) and I had a "buffer overflow error 0004" during the rebuilding process on the VTS_7 Rebuilding segment 0 VOBID 1 CELLID 1 wich is the VTS movie

Just one stupid thing, but when the "Movie and Menus Only" mode is enabled, Steal Space from Extras option is enable too ( 1st line of my log ) an d when I look in my VIDEO_TS folder the other VTS_X vob that dont belong to the movie are not nul, maybe thaht could explain some crash, because you blank something that you encode with a very low bitrate after, I only just see this now ;)
I may be very stupid sometimes lol
OK I just will try what jdobbs asks me, a backup without preprocessing.
virtual_francky
19th April 2005, 19:20
OK so here are the results of my test :
1/ Capitain Sky
The full backup went ok, I didnt choose any preprocessing
2/ Captain Sky or any other DVD
When I choose the "Movie an Menus only", any DVD I try to backup, I get the "buffer overflow error 0004" message. If I go in to the VIDEO_TS folder to see the different vob, some vob are blanked and some dont ( maybe the menu, but 2 different series of vob for 1 menu seems stange but possible ), and the first vob of the movie is present and 360 Mo sized, the 2nd is the one who crash DVD-RB is 150 Mo.
So it seems that the rebuild phase crash the program but I dont have any clue why.
Here s th log for more info :

All I can say is that on the last few days I've made 5 backups using
movie + menus without any problems... the movies were:
Collateral
Good will hunting
Dead man walking
The last emperor
The whole ten yards
...well had a little glitch with the subtitles of Collateral (as I told you :))

I was going to say Spanglish went well, but I tried to watch the rebuild and all it came out with was a re-encode of a black screen for 2 hours. I wonder what is up?

Spanglish is a diiferent story.
How did you rip Spanglish??
Spanglish has the same sony protection as 'The Forgotten'
If you rip Spanglish with DVD Decrypter and have DVD43 v3.5.2 on in the background...you shouldn't have any problems.
I did it both ways and the only way that worked was with DVD43.

I don't get why there is concern. DVD will do Spanglish and the Forgotten straight-up with no problems.... I've done them. It's easy if you just let it do it -- the problems start when you try to "help" it.
I ripped both of those movies to an ISO, mounted it with Daemon Tools, ran it -- and watched it...

I'm actually testing anorther DVD of mine ( Back to the future ) wich has a lot of extra on 1 disc. I ve lauch the backup with Menu and Movie only option selected.
I will have the answer later this afternoon when I will be back from my office.
But any one experience my problem; jdobbs do you have any clue of what might be the problem ? . In fact letting the prog do he job all by itself cause no problem at all, but if I try to blanked some vob in internal or external using Vobblanker I have 2 differents messages
The error 0004 buffer overflow with the internal process and the error 0009 difference betwin prepare and rebuild phase
But the crash always occure during the rebuild process.

I'll have to look at it, but one of the interesting things about those DVDs is that in the IFOs they have "cell" pointers that point to areas smaller than a cell (a start/end sector reference within a longer true cell). In the original the pseudo cells are a part of the PGC and represent a short (a second or two) blank period. A typically copying program might then see the reference to the VOBID and CELLID and assume the IFO's "cell" reference was talking about that cell. It then would reference the entire cell at during playback -- and have a 15 second (or more) annoying blank period at the start.
DVD-RB recognizes the pseudo cells and reproduces them in the output. My guess is that trying to blank the cell (segment) is making it impossible for DVD-RB to reproduce the pseudo cells. I'll have to look and see if that is correct.

Ok you may have pointed something, but I don't understand why the crash occures during the rebuild phase and on the movie's VTS files, the blanked vts are correctly rebuild as I found them in the output directory of the backup. But what you are pointing may be a problem because no crash occures when no preprocessing option is enabled.
Thx for trying to solve this problem :)

I haven't checked it out yet -- but the new sector offsets are collected during rebuild so the IFO can be updated. The pseudo sectors are always part of the movie VTS... are you saying you aren't blanking that segment out?

With Spanglish everything is fine on the rip from the disc, until I run it through rebuilder. Preprocessing or not, plays off the HDD fine then I get into trouble after rebuild. I am not sure why I haven't seen this before. The disc is ripped properly I ran it with 0.85 and went back to 0.841. It is confusing, some of these new discs, problematic.
Just so we are clear if I do any preprocessing it's always only vobblanker and shrink (no compression) to remove audio tracks and the layer break. Nothing else, I stopped doing menuedit before because that sometimes created needless issues.

Ok my test with "Back to the Future" R2 was successfull, I have a backup of my DVD and the extra are blanked.
So I can tell that the problem with the others 2 DVDs are not due to my configuration but a DVD structure one.
I'm sorry but I don't understand your final question in your last post. All I can say is that The crash occurs on these DVD when I remove some languages and subtitles, and enable the "Menu and movie only" option.
Maybe if you explain me what you want to know, i'll try yo answer.
genericuser
20th April 2005, 20:22
Perhaps the difference is how Spanglish gets ripped to the HD before DVD-RB sees it. If I remember correctly from some other threads, dvd decrypter needs to have the "check structure" protection boxes clicked in order to get it onto the HD in the correct format.
When I read that I checked my dvd decrypter and the box was not checked by default.
Is it possible that jdobbs is ripping in one manner and Cwluc is ripping in another?
Just a thought...

DVD Decrypter, 3.5.4.0, with the "Check For Structure Protection" checked, if I need to re-rip it with something else I am game, reverted to my HBO nightmare with a fresh install of everything...here is hoping.
jdobbs, I only installed 2.50 and it will run that properly in 0.85, is it me or can I only have one version of CCE installed at a time to get the correct version to CCE to run? Normally I had two and could select between the two of them.

I am also having a problem with Spanglish. I ripped it with Decrypter 3.5.4.0 in file mode with "check for structure protection" enabled and nothing to "help" it. The ripped movie plays fine, menus and all. When I get into problems is when I try and run it through Rebuilder. I set everything up as normal (stock CCE 4 pass) using Rebuilder 0.84 Pro. The encode completes and Rebuilder throws a buffer overflow error #0004 and after I click ok quits. This has really been bugging me, maybe somebody can offer some help.
Thanks,
Duffin

That buffer overflow error is usually an indicator that the source is corrupt in some way. The null packets that are created by DVD Decrypter's structure protection check are passed over in that routine.
In version 0.86 I've added code that will increase the buffer size up to a higher limit when needed because I found one DVD that legitimately needed more buffer space (it wasn't the case with Spanglish NTSC R1).
But just a warning: I have to put a limit somewhere, or a corrupt source will eventually cause an out-of-memory error and might crash your computer completely.

Ok, I seem to have suddenly run into this problem again. I thought it had been resolved last week, but apparently I was wrong.
I keep getting the Error 0006 and 9 error messages. I just tried to back up Battlestar Galactica 1978 (6 discs), and the Vicar of Dibley (1 disc). All are NTFS R1 discs. One of the BG discs would not process, and the Vicar won't process. I have checked, and I have added that line into the Rebuilder.ini file (see the file contents below). I ripped with Decryptor in file mode (as I always do), and have done no preprocessing of any kind. My RB settings are to do a full disc rebuild with no space taken away from extras or anything else (I don't have any of those options checked).

Two things that you must correct.
First of all you say that you are using CCE 2.50 but that's not the version you have selected under CCE Options (Menu Options)
Second... you are not using the last version os DVD Decrypter.

Well, I bought the CCE Basic (or whatever it was, about $60), and followed all the installation instructions. On my DVDRB menu bar I have "CCE MOde" selected. So, perhaps I am wrong as to which one I am using. Is Basic different than 2.50? I suppose it is and I just looked at the wrong file and incorrectly told you what I was using.
As for the Decryptor version, why would it work properly on 9 out of 10 discs in a set but not on one of them (#8 of 10, to be specific)?
Anyway, so what you are suggesting is I get the latest Decryptor and re-rip that disc, then try running it through DVDRB again?
