VBR to CBR

I have successfully resized 1 out of 2 AVI files that I want to convert to 4:3 format (eventually to burn to DVD). I used VirtualDub, keeping the height the same, changing the width to a width appropriate to the ratio, cropping the excess width by equal amounts on the left and the right. Great result.
On the second file VirtualDub says the audio is a VBR (variable bit rate) type and recommends decompressing the entire audio track, converting it to CBR (constant bit rate) and then recompressing it.
How do I do this and then how do I add it back to the AVI?
The audio format is MPEG Layer 3.

Hi!
You will need to demux your AVI file using AVI-Mux GUI or VirtualDubMod or Virtual Dub.
Then you will get the mp3 file that you will have to recompress to CBR, for this case you can use BeLight/BeSweet.
Finally remux the AVI file with your new mp3 CBR using AVI-Mux GUI.
That should work.

Do you mean by demux to seperate the audio, how do I do this with AVI Mux. Next how do I recompress it with BeSweet. Then how do I rejoin the two with AVI Mux?
Obviously I am fairly new to this, so forgive the stupidity !!!

No problem!
So, here we go: Actually you can do everithing with AVIMux-GUI
Open AVIMux-GUI, drag and drop your avi file into the uper window, then select the file and press the button "generate data source from files". You will see the audio file bellow, on this file, right clik mouse and select "extract binary" then you will be able to save the audio file.
Now you have to get the avi without audio, do the same as before and select "no audio", then "start" and you'll get an non audio avi.
After you made the mp3 recompress, drag and drop in AVIMux-GUI in the uper window, first the non audio avi file and after your new mp3, select the avi file and press "generate data source from files", then select "all audio streams" and "start".
If everything was ok, you will have a new avi with CBR mp3.

Thanks for your help, your second method is probably easier than the one I used, downloading BeSweet and its associated GUI and Aziz, Lame etc. I acheived the result I wanted, great software components. Now I want to create 6 channel audio (that might be my next 'HELP' posting) - I'm never satisfied !!!!:D

I did not understand so well, you want to create a 6 channel audio from an mp3? well... if that's the case, let me tell you is nearly impossible.
You can may be simulate a 6 channel audio from a stereo one, but I'm not sure that is going to be a satisfied result. In this cases I always say: "Original source is always the best".

No I may not have been clear, I want to use a stereo (was mp3 but converted to wav or whatever) track and incorporate it into a 6 channel DVD audio track, probably by adjusting each channel subtly. How!!!???!

Well... whatever you have mp3 or wav, the source is an stereo audio file.
You want to convert mp3/wav/ac3. In the first process you will get a 16 bit wave (from an mp3) :rolleyes:, then from wave to ac3 :rolleyes:, you can convert it, it's no problem but the result will be not a real 5.1 ac3 (6 differents audio channels), but a simulated 5.1 ac3 because your source is stereo and this is no way to change it.

Just because VDub feels your audio ought to be CBR doesn't mean you have to go along with it. Just click 'No' and get on; you'll have VBR audio with no problems and higher efficiency. If you click 'yes, then VDub will do it for you, but you will have audio asynch.
