I have a DVD which is 8GB large. It has a main movie, some extra features and extra's which consists of parts of the main movie.

I want to use CCE to re-encode, but the compression is too large for good quality. I also want to keep everything and there are no sound streams or subs streams to strip.

If I would drop one extra, which is exactly the same as some parts of the main movie, I have 6,5 GB left to compress, which is a lot better.

Is there a way to link the buttons of all the menus this extra consists of to the main movie and keep it the same as the original?

The chapters of this extra are unfortunately not the same as the chapters of the main movie.
So is it possible to link a button to a part of the main movie, for example link a button to play from minute 20 to minute 22
(the start, minute 20 and finish, minute 22 are not chapter points)?

I hope you understand what I mean,

thanks.

What you're saying is not possible that way I think.

What you could try to do (since you're willing to reauthor the hard way anyway ;) :

Add extra pgcs to your main movie . In those pgcs you create the extras. So using pieces of video form your mainmovie you create the extras. You'll be free to set your own chapter points etc in those extras pgcs.

Afterwards you have to relink menu buttons etc of course.

I'm not saying this is easy, but if you're up for a challenge it's some good practise ;)

I dont think I understand you quit well.

You say add extra pgcs to the main movie and create extra's in it. It is already this way on the original DVD. Is it possible to create a PGC which plays content of the main movie PGC, so I do not have the same pieces of movie twice on the DVD??

Let me try to make it a bit more clear:

You have a DVD with a kind of documentary of windsurfing, the main movie contains interviews with windsurfers, shots of windsurfing, explaination of all the gear etc.

Now there is an extra menu where you have can choose submenus, like interviews, jumps, etc. If you play this you get only the interviews from the main movie, or the jumps from the main movie, what you choose. On the original DVD this is stored in another PGC, so that is all double on the DVD, so 1,5 GB is twice on it.

mag ook in het nederlands hoor ;)

thanks

Ah ok, well now I think it's you that doesn't understand it quite well ;)

The extras you're talking about are not twice on the dvd. (well at elast if it's authored correctly). If you look at the ifo structure you'll see that those pgcs that contain the extras share vobids with the corresponding parts from the main movie. So this doesn't lead to a bigger dvd.

If you want me to make it more clear, please post some parts of the ifo from which we can see the structure of this titleset.

ps: and since english is the language of this board, dutch is not an option. But I don't believe English is a problem.

Yes, they are twice on the DVD!

The extra's double are title 2 to 7 (PGC2 to PGC7). They are 'parts' which are in the main movie exact the same, behind each other.

This still is not the information we need to see. Open VTS_01_0.IFO and look at the summary. It will show you each PGC and the VOB-ID's used by them.

hmm, every pgc has it's own vobid(s) so that would indeed mean that things are duplicated. That would be strange if it's really the exact same video though. What you could try to do is recreating the pgcs with the extras using pieces of video og the main movie. But as you said the the chapters don't match. And if the cells do not either then it will become quite a tough task (if possible at all)

If I demux the main movie and remux with new chapter points, the points from the main movie and the chapter points from the duplicated extras.
Is it possible to set a button from the extra menu to play for example chapetr 10 and 11 and then 14 en 15 or after 10 en 11 go back to the submenu?

If you are re-authoring everything, menus and all, and demuxing the main movie and remuxing with new chapter points, what you could do is:

For the menu with the buttons for the extras linking to chapters 10 and 11 set the buttons to do this:
{Mov GPRM 0, 1; LinkPGCN nothing-16~9-t-pgc} - this "nothing-16~9" is a dummy file where you would set the post command to Jump to whatever VTS folder your main movie is in.

Then for the pre command of your main movie PGC set it to do this:
if (GPRM0==1) Link to whatever chapter 10's cell number is.

Then set a cell command for chapter 10 to:
if (GPRM0==1) Link to whatever chapter 11's cell number is.

Then for chapter 11's cell set it to:
Mov GPRM1, 1
if (GPRM0==GPRM1) CallSS RSM=1, RootMenu - since we set GPRM1 to 1 this last command will make it so you jump back to your root menu after chapter 11 has finished playing.

Now remember that you must set the pre command of your root menu to:
Mov GPRM0, 0
Because if you don't, whenever you want to play the movie all the way through after checking out an extra, it will only run through chapters 10 and 11 since GPRM0 is still set to 1

I think this might work, but let me know if it doesn't. You learn something new everyday from these forums!

I found out that DVDremake can add chapter points whereever you want , and keeping the menus:

http://www.dimadsoft.com/dvdremakepro/ht_insert_chapter.php?PHPSESSID=c8b0a248419d5ba551964d0bad23fc4d

So, I will give it a try.

Just in case you have not found yet, DRM Pro has also a "substitute block" action which will let you "reuse" some cells from the VTS in different PGCs. So that you can quite easily add new PGC, add needed amount of blank cells to it and substitute them with chapters you want.

@nfinney - adding cell commands will make the main movie pause wherever there are commands. There is no need for commands if there is a seperate PGC for each, but some additional cells might need to be created to accomodate the various playback options.

Apparently the original was authored by someone not familiar with "stories" or how to prevent Scenarist from making a chapter out of every scene. So instead duplicated the needed video - what a waste.

what a waste

Absolutely.

This dvd isn't be authored with scenarist btw, the muxing engine of scenarist can't produce those ilvu parts. Not that I see what's the use of it in this case anyway.

Yeah I wasn't sure if the cell commmands would create a pause or not, so thanks for clearing that up mpucoder.

You can go the cell commands route if you want:

Demux by pgc. Create the first pgc just as the original.
Create a second pgc with adjusted chapter points (just as you need them) for your extras.

Since you're completely changing the structure of the titleset this will become quite a huge task though :). Changing the menu commands and since you're probably unable to use ifoupdate/batchupdate ifo you will also have to add all relevant pre/post commands etc.

I am attempting to create a PGC with about 60 cells and use cell commands to dynamically nagivate from one cell to the next to create the effect of random playback. Am I limited to one cell command per cell? Do the cell command have to appear in the same order as the cells?

No.

Yes. But they can be conditional, i.e. if (XXX) then YYY. In case contidion XXX is not true next cell will be played. (next depends on the PGC playback mode).

If this is all you want you can just set PGC playback mode to random (or shuffle).
