I have a set-top player with DivX and XviD playback ability. For a while now, I've been encoding my DVDs to DivX in order to fit 9 GB DVDs on 4.5 GB DVD-R blanks.

It occurred to me, that I could also use any of the many DVD shrinking programs, or even re-encode the DVD manually to fit on a DVD-R blank. Comparing equal file sizes, how does MPEG2 (DVD) encoding stack up against DivX ?

You can't make Mpeg2 or DVD with so low bitrates as Mpeg4 (DivX, XviD). It is not comparable, it is inacceptable bad.

How many movie in Mpeg4 (DivX) encoding you put on one DVD?

I tend to put 4 movies on a DVD-R.... typically I encode a 90 minute movie to 1120 mb, or 1/4 DVD.
