Hardware MPEG2 encoder?

Does anyone have any experience with this card:

It says it does "Hardware MPEG2 real-time encoding", which would be nice. How well does it work? Do you have to use their software for the hardware encoding to work? I don't do a whole lot of capture, because I'm usually using my main machine for other things, and none of my other computers have enough processing power to do a very good job.

From looking at the description and their website, I haven't been able to figure out what chipset it uses for the encoding, so maybe someone with more knowledge or a keener eye can tell me more.

I actually did see those posts, but none of them talk about this model. The one post does talk about a card that the poster thought had hardware encoding, but it did not. That was one of the reasons I made this post, to find out if this model did in fact, use hardware to encode and if so, what the quality was like.

From the photos at newegg,it looks like a Conexant chipset to me, though I cannot make out the model#.

Yeah, I see that, it looks like there are two conexant chips, which makes sense, but I can't find anything that says what specific chips they are. I'm thinking about just buying one to test it, but I was kinda hoping that someone more knowledgeable than me would have some input/opinion about the card.

and here http://www.kworldcomputer.com/image/MC200-2.jpg you can see that the other chip seems to be CX23416-12 if my eyes are serving me well (or this time it's more because of the poor display in this laptop)

Hey, thanks. The picture is actually for the next model up, but I'm sure that it probably has the same chip, I think it just comes with better/more software. Now for the real question, are those chips decent?

From what I've read, the CX23416-12 is the MPEG2 encoder, correct? I haven't really been able to find much other info on it. Will I need to use their software to make it capture right, or is there a better program that will do it?

You do know that card ONLY works with Windows XPMCE, right?

I just bought this card from Newegg and have been trying to get it to work with XP Pro but it's been a nightmare. The drivers don't work properly like reboot says. I'm going to try MCE next and see how it goes.
From what I've read since buying the card I think you're better off getting one with the newer chipset. also:

really? That surprises me. I figured anything with WDM drivers would be good to go. By "the newer chipset", what do you mean? Both of those threads that you linked are about 3 years old, so take them with a grain of salt.

edit: After checking Kworlds sight again, both of the cards explicitly state they are SUPPOSED to work on XP and 2000.

If the drivers are supposed to work on XP then they totally suck! The newer chipset is like B657 or something. Someone here will know what I'm talking about. If I had it to do again I think I would go with a bigger name brand. The only reason I didn't is because I was told that the big manufactures may write Macrovision protection into their capture drivers. I'm going to have MCE up and running in a few hours, I'll post the results.

It still uses conexant chips of some sort, which ones I'm not sure about, but maybe support for it is better. It says its for MCE too, but on the avermedia web site, it says that it will work in XP as well

You've been totally misled.
Get a Hauppauge PVR-250/350/500 and you'll never look at those other cards again.

If newegg would have had the Hauppage 150 in stock, I would have gotten it. Instead, I got the Avermedia because I have a project coming up in a week, and I need a card. Hopefully it works alright. We'll see I guess. Otherwise, I'll dump it and go for the Hauppage.

The 150 has some huge issues, and I wouldn't buy one yet. Hauppauge needs to work out the no audio, and audio sync issues, as well as the channel scanning.
Notice I didn't say anything about the 150 in my previous post...

ahh, good point, I'll keep that in mind if I don't like the Avermedia card.
