I've never tried the OPV mode before (normally do 2-4 passes) and I had my doubts that the OPV mode would work well on my League Of Gentlemen 8gib + disc, but I have to say, for the 1 and a half hours it took, i'm very impressed with the results! Pixilation was noticeable in clouds and walls for instance, but nothing too bad at all. In fact, i'm wondering if I should ever use DVD Shrink again if they all come out this well?! I'm, re-doing the disc with a 4-pass encode to see if there is any or much difference. I'm sure theres some highly technical reason why the quality is so high for a short encode, but I'm just happy it works! Do most people use this mode rather than the multi-pass option now?

what was your average bitrate?

I'll have to check that when I get home tonight....
I'm just wondering at the moment how far I can push this method, before using a full multi-pass option.

Me often...

Personal observation is that the precise hitting of a given target size is sometimes critical in OPV, even adopting some sophisticated prediction schemes, as it is possible based on the nice RB-OPT add-on by Robot1...

Said this, again IMHO, when the target size is hitten with a good approximation, OPV is even better, based on what I can see, than multipass...

Cheers,

From the log: HIGH/LOW/TYPICAL Bitrates: 4,073/1,802/2,386 Kbs

A second disc I'm trying: HIGH/LOW/TYPICAL Bitrates: 7,782/1,191/1,887 Kbs

Are these figures good/normal?

From the test on the first disc, I picked a bad scene and its possible the OPV version was very slightly worse than the 4-pass, but you'd have to be looking damn close!

Maybe I've just been lucky with my first disc?

Well... many of my backups have been made using OPV. The few times I got an Oversize result I used ReJig mode to fix it (another 15-20 minutes) :D

keep it UP

Typical? it isnt AVERAGE?

I would say your average is on the low side. I would recomend you (if you havent do it yet) to try the "Half D1 and Half Space for Extras" under the MODE menu in RB.

It wouldnt increase the average but it would alocate more bitrate to the main movie (in fact to the largest VTS) by reducing the amount allocated to the extras, where you probably care less.

You can try to strip unneeded audio streams.

Other option would be to use the "Resize to Half D1" (under Options/AVS options/ Advanced(Expert) Options: Some people think that for low bitrates (below 2000?) resizing to a lower definition (doubling the size of each pixels) provides a better viewing experience
