a question about ffdshow

i know the codecs and decoders used by ffdshow are stand alone products that come with it.
i also understood they come from some project named ffmpeg.
what i wanted to know was, what does it mean "livacodec" and whether when a new version of xvid comes out the xvid livacodec is updated or is it not related?

i hope my question was clear.

Here's my attempt, somebody correct me if I'm weong anywhere.

"libavcodec" is a library of various open source audio/video codec implementations. FFMpeg is based on libavcodec.

Selecting libavcodec for a codec in ffdshow means that it will use that for decoding.

New versions of say xvid can introduce changes and features that the current libavcodec mpeg4 decoder does not support, and thus libavcodec developers release an updated version to support it.

XviD is not part of libavcodec. Libav has its own mpeg-4 asp implementation.
In fact, it's not "a library of various open source audio/video codec implementations" but it's just an encoding/decoding library of various formats, period.

so if i understood correctly ffmpeg has it's own xvid codec that is completely seperate from the Koepy xvid.
i do understand livacodecs come from a folder and because of that they take less cpu.
quality wise, is ffdshow's postprocessing of xvid considered better?
in encoding which is better, xvid or ffdshow?

No! As already said libavcodec does NOT contain XviD. Also as said libavcodec has its own MPEG-4 ASP implementation, which of course can decode XviD and produce content that XviD can decode. Reason being that XviD is itself and ASP MPEG-4 implimentation.

Sharktooth: ffdshow shows the videos much better for me.
im not sure if this is because of the post-processing but there's no doubt about it.
also i like the resizing feature although i use it rarely because my computer is too slow fo it.

sorry, i meant: use xvid for encoding since xvid is more advanced, faster and produces better quality than libavcodec mpeg-4 encoder.
ffdshow is a great piece of software and i use it for decoding mpeg-4 (xvid, divx, etc) too.
