What i need to be able to do is take a video file that is going to be either in a ".avi" or a ".ogg" video format and burn it to DVD+R such that it can play on a normal dvd player. If its already in a guide then all i need is a pointer to the appropriate guide. Thanks :)

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

See if one of Doom9's AVI -> DVD guides (http://www.doom9.org/conversionguides.htm) meets your needs.

Rule 1 says:

1) Read up before asking! There are tons of guides (http://www.doom9.org/guides.htm), FAQs (http://faq.doom9.net/) and each forum has a dedicated Q&A thread with additional info.

1a) Use the search function before posting. Chances are your question has already been answered.

The Rules also say:

If you don't comply with these rules you'll have to face a set of sanctions (http://forum.doom9.org/sanctions.htm).

I apologize for reminding you of this. Mighty white of jggimi for not having done so. I wouldn't have done it if you hadn't written "it's probably already here". It meant you couldn't care less.

Regards.

When it comes to moderating forums -- those in which we are the moderators of record, as well as those where we may lend assistance, such as I do here -- each of us approaches the job slightly differently. So what follows, below, is my personal approach to new member activity, and doesn't necessarily coincide with any other moderator's approach.I won't usually come down hard on new members, unless they are belligerent or rude. Everyone makes mistakes, and learning from them is what's most important. So I will usually point out behavioral problems or rules infractions, and, I try to be as polite as I can be when doing so, even if, when someone else reads the reply, they can "hear" me gritting my teeth and forcing a smile. Granted, that's usually the case with R6/R4 problems, because they are our most serious issues to deal with.

I'm much less forgiving of people who are no longer new members...but each of us defines "newbie" in a different way. In my case, I look at both post count and signup date (month/year), and make a judgement call. Typically, I consider someone a newbie if their signup date is less than 4 months ago, and if they have less than 10 posts.

I try to avoid intimidating our new members. I see some newbs who post for the first time more than a year after signing up. Lots of us get IMs from newbies ... or even guests ... afraid to post what they think is a stupid question. So it is my belief that our community has an intimidating level of knowledge. So that's yet another reason I try to be polite when I post responses; I want new members to have a pleasant experience.

In addition, it's also possible for a brand-new member to join the forum without ever knowing that Doom9's guide/news website exists -- especially if they discover forum threads through Google or another search engine. So when it comes to R1s for absolute newbs, I'm more relaxed than for any other sort of infraction, because it really is a question of learning not only what to search for, but where and how.I hope this view into my thought processes was helpful.

I apologize for breaking the rule#1, but if i may explain myself somewhat perhaps we can move onfrom this issue. I myself am not new to burning data discs and when i signed up however long ago it was i was looking into getting into backing up my dvd media. However that project of mine never got off the ground. Quite frankly i find this stuff confusing and to be honest i had no idea what i was looking at with most of those guides. and while i may be more computer then the average guy im like a fish out of water when it comes to this stuff. So once again i apologize if i was breaking rule #1.

Y'know, Yumader, when I began, I too didn't have the faintest about DVD, GOP, B-frames, YV12, you name it. What the hell, you don't have to know anything to be able to learn. I'd say I have learned some. As jggimi says, these fora are peopled by Geeks with an intimidating level of knowledge. Very often, listening to them converse, you'll feel like being in a strange country where people are talking in a strange dialect of the English language. Someone had named this lingo Proglish, I suppose meaning Programmers' English.

Don't worry if you feel like a fish out of water. Just look around for the other fishes. The first one'll probably be me.

They are correct and only trying to help. Reading some of the guides help you understand what you are seeing and help us know what you mean because we all will be speaking the same "language." Getting back to your original post is a perfect example you said:

What i need to be able to do is take a video file that is going to be

Going to be? What is it now? In reading your post jggimi seems to understand you have a avi and want to put it on dvd. I am wondering if you already have a dvd and just want to back it up. Going dvd-avi-dvd is a bad idea because you lose quality at each step. If i am correct, you need another guide than the one indicated. There are many routes if you are going dvd-dvd. If I am wrong, then jggimi pointed you in the right direction. Give us a little more information please.

Yes, what I feel Yumadar is looking for is the howto of mpg2 > mpg4 conversion, which then he wants to archive on a DVD-R (perhaps along with other files). Of course he'd need a DVD player to read that file.

As a beginner, he'd do well to use AutoGK 1.95 (http://www.autogk.me.uk/index.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=2) (the latest stable version) which comes with a nifty help guide for the beginner. Then he can burn the file with Nero 6 following this (ftp://ftp6.nero.com/user_guides/nero6rel/burningrom6/NeroBurningRom_ug_eng.zip) guide.

what im *trying* to do is this ... i already have files that are for the most part in .avi but some that are in the .ogg file formats ... downloaded episodes of fansubbed anime which is legal so long as they havent been liscenced and to my knowledge none of the episodes for which i want to do this to are not such liscenced, they come in these file formats ... anyways, a friend of mine is interested in watching this anime however all he has available to him is a standard, normal dvd player so i would like to burn these episodes to a dvd so that he may watch them and as far as i know dvd players are incapable of reading files in .avi and .ogg. if there is anything else you would need to know just ask.

*edit*
the burning i do on dvd's now is just making data disk's on my IOmega Super dvd burner with the burning program that came with the drive called IOmega Hotburn Pro

Well, I'd thought you were trying to do just that; convert .avi files into DVDs. There are two AVI -> DVD guides on the web page I pointed you to. Have you gone through either of them, yet?

Do you have any questions, if you have?

I'd like to know this: can one just archive an .avi file on to a DVD in the Data mode as an .avi file, without putting it through a format conversion?

Yes, ukb. My standalone's manual is not very lear as to MPEG-4 limitations (other than Q-PEL or GMC), but regarding DVD media it states:...The player can also play back MPEG-4 (Advanced simple profile) and DivX files recorded on CD-R/RW, DVD-R/-RW. Some DVD-R
and DVD-RW discs mastered as multi border (multi-session) may not be compatible with the player....Use "UDF format" as the disc format for DVD-R/-RW....I'm still wondering if Yumadar has had any success or not with Doom9's guides. They speak to .avi rather than .ogm containers, and he may need help with the latter. Yumadar?

Yumadar has made three posts since January 2004. It's possible he is actually trying to digest the guides, and we can be sure he'll post once he is quite ready.

ok ... ive finally had the chance to sit down and try to follow the AVI2SVCD guide and this is whats happening. I select the file to convert , verify the proper aspect ratio with GSpot, click the magical convert button, watch the pretty progress bars do their thing, and i end up with a lot of files in my output folder including the .bin and .cue files necessary for burning(both of which are under 2MB in size)a couple of logfiles, about a dozen or so audio files which are all 8 seconds long and play the same sound, a couple avisynth script files, and a bunch of configuration files. now i cant figure out whats wrong but under the GO button there is an option to "Preview video(still picture)" and on clicking this it tries to bring up a frame of the video file but instead where the frame is displayed there is an error message which says "Avisource: couldn't locate a decon(rest is cut off by the edge of the "frame")below which is (D:\programs\apps\DVD2SVCD\TE[again the rest is cut off by the edge of the frame]. But when i use TMPG directly i can convert it just fine its just that i cant figure out how get it to burn to a CD-R as a VCD which is recognizable to my DVD player. i currently use the demo version of Nero 6.6 and it seems to burn fine its just my DVD player wont even recognize that i put the disc in. if there is anything else you need to know to help me let me know and i will post it.

@yumadar

first of all, u should know whether your player supports (can play) other than dvd. if it supports (s)vcd, u should know what formats. i.e., how stricktly must it follow the standards. afaik, avi2svcd produces full-compliant streams, so the 1st question is the really important.

if your player supports (s)vcd, you can add the mpeg stream produced by avi2svcd to nero and ask for writing 'svcd' (its an option in the vertical bar on the left). it will do.

there are other ways too. say, building cue/bin and burn that but it involves further tampering and, i guess, u would prefer one click solutions ;)

if your player supports dvd only u must go trickin as the format of the streams (video, audio, aso) in (s)vcd are not dvd compliant. see e.g. :
http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/svcd2dvdr.htm
http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/tutorial/svcd.html
w/o this trickin a 'normal' burner (like nero) refuses to burn and if u succeed somehow your player wont recognise the final dvd as 'playable'. (my first player dropped that blatant 'no disk' msg for such stuffs) however, it's worth to try as this way u can fit more than one movie onto a single dvd in a compliant way.

easier way : convert to dvd. many progs support it and there's no prob w/burning after all.

remember, reencoding always means quality degradation.

To see what your standalone supports; not only in data format (like SVCD), but also, in terms of media -- sometimes down to brand -- check it out by make and model at Videohelp.com's player database (www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers).

OK Yumadar.
Looks like you've been using DVD2SVCD.
Right then.
Have a look in the DVD2SVCD Basic forum.

There is a sticky which may help called AVI2*** fails (at some point)
In here, one of the things it deals with is the Avisource: could not find a decompressor for...error.

If your player cannot play SVCD or VCD, select DVD output in the Misc tab and make a DVD instead :)

I remain slightly concerned about your 8 second audio files...I presume the video file you're converting is longer than 8 seconds.
One thing to try is in the Audio tab - you can use either Internal routines or VFW to extract the audio. Whichever one it's using - try the other and see if the full audio is extracted.
