Any free software to convert mpg to AVI

I need to convert some mpg files to AVI. Is there any good free video convertor to do this without having any water marks?

With a little trail and error you soon get used to it. The more interesting implementations can be found under the "Filters" tab... But, I really should finish writing the guide - even though the application isn't being upgraded anymore.

Thanks to all for all your siggestions and help, I really appreciate it.
I'm trying AutoGK and works fine but it is taking looooong time to convert.
Here is what I'm trying to do:
- I have a 3 hour DVD (Home videos recorder from stand alone DVD player with no menus or chapters)
- I want to import this as mpeg or avi file (should not have ac3 stream since my DVD auhtor dose not support ac3)
- after converting the DVD to avi or mpeg, then I will use my dvd author (Roxio basic) to add chapters, menus, etc.

Any other easy way to do this?

Your thread title said you want to convert to AVI. Now you're telling us you want to go to DVD.

Your VOBs are already DVD compliant. Your query thus belongs in the DVD authoring forum.

yes, I want to convert to avi and that is my main goal here.
Converting to avi is part of what I'm doing as a total.

Have you considered that you may not have to go to an intermediate AVI? You haven't said you want to resize or filter the video.

Bad on me, sorry, Newbies is never the wrong forum. I was just suggesting that you might get better support for this kind of thing in the DVD Authoring section.

thanks neuron2, I really appreciate your help.
Maybe I need to explain myself better so i can get beter help.

I used to decrypt my 3 hour dvd using dvd dycripter and demuxing the video (m2v) and audio (ac3). Then conveting both to mpeg2 using Imago MPEG Muxer. Then used Nero to edit the video, add chapters and menus and creat a DVD. Then I chnaged machines and now I have roxio instead of Nero. The version of roxio will not support any video file with ac3 stream. So I'm trying to get avi file with diferent audio stream so I can import it to roxio, edit it and auhtor it.
So my problem is how to get an avi or mpeg files with a different audio stream than ac3.
I hope this makes it clear and again sorry for the confusion.

So basically you want MPEG-2 --> MPEG-2 at a smaller size?

Why do you even need Roxio then? You need something like DVDShrink (simple, low quality) or DVDRebuilder + CCE (less simple, better quality)/DVDRemake.

MPEG-2 --> MPEG-4 --> MPEG-2 is a bad idea because you lose quality at every step.

Why not just demux as you are doing and then convert the audio to an acceptable format using BeSweet+BeSweetGUI (or equivalent)?

What I want to do is re edit the movie, add my own menus, graphics, etc and then reauthor. In order to do this, I have to convert the original DVD to mpeg, avi, wmv file with streaming audio other than ac3, so I can import it to Roxio to to all the editing and re authoring.

Oops. I missed that part. Yes, DVDShrink won't do that, but DVDRemake will.

But the smartest (and simplest) thing is probably what neuron2 said about demuxing AC3 and doing AC3->MP3 or something such and then giving it to Roxio.
