IE vs Firefox - what's your experience re: spyware etc?

Hi.

I am an ex-IE user, now shifted to Firefox, and find relief on many fronts. Adblock, for example, is one big relief. Spywares and virii do come, but these are much fewer in numbers, and my antivirus effectively and instantly deals with them.

What are your experiences?

Back on my win usage, the main reason for switching were the
popups that kept coming. Afterwards, some extensions like Quicknote, Adblock, hah (a really cool extension, if you click >, then all links will suddenly appear with a number, if you type in that number, its the same as clicking on it with mouse.) came in, and of course tabbed browsing and some about:config settings.


All in one things that IE at the current date rather fails at. Yet I see some of my lazy friends still use IE. Why? Well ... convenience.

Convenience killed the cat more than curiousity ever will.... ;)

Yeah Firefox just is superior. No other way to put it. No way to deny it. Even those here who still use IE at best only have minor personal problems with Firefox. Like the fact that Firefox does not break long lines of text etc. Which isn't part of any standard. Just something that Microsoft did that actually worked and that people liked. Mozilla Firefox supports all the important standards and does it better then the big guys. And those holding out for IE7 are only going to be disapointed. Microsoft has already stated that while they will actually be updating PNG support they will not be updating much else in the way of standards. They "feel" that things like the ancient CSS2 standard which predates PNG and has not changed any if at all since about the time PNG came into being, is to subject to change and therefore they don't feel that it is worth improving. Translating the Microsoft speak it comes out as this.

"Standards only weaken out corporate hold on many markets. Forcing us to compete. We don't like to compete. We have the fastest table rendering browser on the planet. And while there are better things to use than tables for layouts these days we aim to keep them from getting used. MICROSOFT HAS SPOKEN"

It is really rediculous. Microsoft is willing to fix it's PNG support. But they are not willing to fix their CSS2 support because they claim the standard might change! Even though the W3C no longer is working on the CSS2 standard. They have moved on and are more or less done with CSS3. Microsoft's motives are fairly transparent. So while IE users will finally get tabbed browsing and working PNG support the rest of the world has enjoyed for years. They will still be using an inferior product and readily accepting the shaft Microsoft is so willing to dish out to their paying customers. It's really sad when people poorer than you can afford to give out better things for free than you give your paying customers. :p

Businesses have a few valid issues left with Mozilla Firefox though. Many internal web based aplications use the security hole more commonly known as activeX. Not that it is a huge issue as there is a Mozilla activeX plugin (http://www.iol.ie/~locka/mozilla/plugin.htm). Just that it does not come with the default install. And then there is the issue that Firefox historically has not come with an MSI installer for active directory rollout. Not that there is a huge issue with that as there are Firefox MSI installers (http://www.frontmotion.com/Firefox/) today. Just that they are currently done by 3rd parties and not on the official download page IIRC. The final issue they have is that Firefox does not use Microsoft's flawed "security zones" feature so it can be administered via Microsoft tools. Not that this is a huge issue either as you can do the same thing better with network gateways and proxies most times.

I think it is only you with the microsoft.com problem. Works fine for me. ;)

I have been busy with blender (http://blender.org/). I have used the program off and on since the late 90's before it went open source. More off than on. But with the recent addition of some new tools etc and the fact that something just clicked all of a sudden I have been getting creative lately. The program is also good for generating high def clips since I don't have access to any of that sort of material otherwise. And these are lossless clips as well. No lossy transcoding so you can get a better feel for codec image quality. As you can see the models are getting progressively more complex. Eventually I will get a whole rigged character going and work on whipping out some decent animations. :D Eventually. And UV mapping. All the models need UV mapped textures etc. Bender and the bear have no pupils etc. :eek: On the last one I used a shader trick to render some basic pupils along the direction of the surface normal. Would you believe that each model is less than 20 or so polygons? Sub surfs are so awesome!

In older posts didn't you have another avatar that (funnily) used to come differently in IE and FF? A red rabbit's head - only visible in its entirity in FF. Readers may see what it was like in IE as well as in FF here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=85163&perpage=20&pagenumber=5), in the post by jorel.

Hah, just like my avatar ;) I'm scared of even thinking how it looks in IE.

As for firefox and spyware, I think I can say that there is no known spyware that would try to exploit any FF security hole, at all. At least I haven't heard of one.

^ I don't count Java holes though (they just exploit older java versions, no matter what your browser is).

The most funny thing - I never ever switched to FF because of security reasons. Never had a virus in my life.

Since switching to firefox, I'm not sure the last time I've had spyware on my machine at all...it's been some time. I've ran AdAware and the only thing that has come up was some settings related to Internet Explorer. The only annoying thing I've found now is that for some sites popups still come up.

Hehehehehe. It is easy and fun to do. You can pester or befuddle IE users with it till the majority of them upgrade to IE7. Or maybe even after. We will just have to see. All you need is a nifty program called PNGQUANT and a truecolor PNG with more than 1bit transparency. So easy anyone can do it. ;) Now if only more did. :D

What does PNGQUANT do? Neo Neko has beginning to sound venerable, remote, geekish, wise like the clueless n00b (http://www.doom9.org/) himself. Did you see how the newssheets have reference to thousands of softwares, half of which you've no clue about?
