Athlon 64 Venice core: supports SSE3 and other goodies

AMD started to ship new athlon 64 CPUs with SSE3 instruction set.

I'm waiting for the San Diego core... Athlon 64 4200+, official release date is the 15th. Then put that into the latest NF4 Shuttle barebone, add a fanless GT6600 card and I will be a very happy camper. Oh yeah, forgot the new 24" Dell TFT display, but buying a new display just to get one more inch.. that's overkill. Hopefully, 25" or 26" HDTV resolution screens with low refresh rates will be out soon.. then I can once again go into a spending spree.

They will be on stores in the next weeks.
Personally i will receive a couple of sample CPUs based on Venice core the next week.
However Venice core can be distinguished by the "BP" letters in the OPN, while San Diego core is identified with the "BN" letters (again in the OPN).
So a chip marked with ADA3800AA4BP is an Athlon64 3800+ with Venice core while a chip marked with ADA4000AA5BN is an Athlon64 4000+ with San Diego core.
San Diego has 1MB L2 cache while Venice has 512KB L2 cache. That's the only difference.

the fanless gigabyte 6600GT is dearer, and clocked lower than a normal 6600GT

I have bought one and put in my girlfriends upgraded PC (together with Epox 9NPA+ mainboard and Winchester 3200+ CPU). But I haven't made any benchmarks yet. It's supposed to have video in but I'm not sure what kind of capture chip it uses. I think it's worth the price difference because I want a silent computer.

Doom9 i envy you. even if i have enough money for a 30" apple cinemadisplay (actually not) it's rare here. I'm even queueing for a basic mac mini since 2nd month...

Even though 30" is great... there's hardly any dual link cards so that kinda makes it a no go.. and it's not quite fast enough for games either. I'm sure we'll get there in say 1-2 years.. who knows, maybe I manage to be happy with my 23" (Philips, not Apple) until then.
