I have tried searching to see if this has been discussed before but all I get is 'this page cannot be displayed' so if this is somewhere else I'm v sorry: Is there any way of burning AVI to DVD or VCD without converting it to another format first, as whenever i do this the quality is much worse and it seems that the only option I have is to convert them to MPEG first (=less quality) my dvd burner is NTI cd&dvd maker. Is there any other program (free, trial or demo) out there that will burn the movie without losing quality (or making the file size bigger)?
thank you very much

hi and welcome to the forum,
try ahead's nero burning rom (www.ahead.de) - free trial available.
it's imho the best burning application around and will, in file mode, burn you avis 1-1 onto DVD without changing the quality.
be aware of the fact that these DVDs will not play in a normal standalone player, as the video format is not compatible!

thank you but i went to the website and clicked on the link and then on 'download the last published package 1' but then you get told that the version is not a demo version and not to download it if you don't have the serial number - is that right?

Well, what you asked for, and what killingspree is recommending is burning a data disc. Readable only by PCs (CD-ROM or DVD-ROM) and certain standalone DVD players that support .avi files. He wrote, "...these...will not play in a normal standalone player..."
Nero, from Ahead software, is the industry leader for CD and DVD burning software. The free trial is a giant red button on their first page, which links to http://ww2.nero.com/us/neroue-prog.php. It states, "New free demo package will be available soon."
I don't know the software you are using today, but it should be able to burn a data disc, if you can't wait for Nero's trial to be updated.

Every version of Nero I've ever had has been packaged with a CD-RW drive, since the drive with Nero together has been cheaper for me than either when packaged separately.

This happened to me about a year ago. I inserted a link to Nero's demo, but when I did a click-through to check it, it was temporarily disabled, like it is now. I doubt that it will take long for them to get another up. Interesting it is--on Nero's contact page there used to be a non-toll-free number for their tech support facility in California, it seems that all tech support issues now have to be submitted via e-mail.

thank you, until the nero site gets its demo up again I shall try your suggestions of burning a data cd. Fingers crossed that it will work!

The demo of Nero's latest software version appears to be up and running.
