I made some test patterns, converted them to MPEG Stills (704x576), and burned them to SVCD to check out the resolution of my TV and the capabilities of my TV tuner card. The patterns displayed fine, except that the DVD displays only half the vertical resolution for some reason, as if the pictures were interlaced and the DVD-player tried deinterlacing.
I recorded the DVD changing the images and going frame by frame I noticed that the first frame after the DVD changed the image had full vertical resolution, but after that the field discarding engaged again. That's fine for testing my TV card because I can capture all the frames and then look at the one proper frame, but it makes testing the television impossible. Also, it's not the fault of my SVCD authoring methods, since the same happened with an SVCD test cd (from vcdimager.org).
So the question is: is it the fault of my DVD player (LG 5253) or do MPEG stills have the same progressive/interlaced flag that MPEG video has? If so, how can I change it?
I tried ReStream, which requires demuxing into elementary streams first. I was able to change the flag, but I couldn't remux (TMPEG) back into an MPEG still, just MPEG video.
PS. If you're interested, here's one test pattern with a load of cross-color interference (notice how the Conexant comb filter chip is only smart enough to remove the interference at the top). Why _not_ to use composite video ;)
