View Full Version : 70MB Undersize Using 'Main Movie + Menu'

Pages : [1] 2

Using the new blanking features (main movie and menu only), this DVD has come out undersized. The reason I bring this up is because manually blanking out the extras using VobBlanker returns perfect results (4.36GB in size); using the internal blanking methods, DVD-RB gave a disc 4.28GB in size. I have adjusted the target sectors to CCETargetSectors=2260000 in the .ini file, and all DVDs with this come out just the right size. The disc is Apollo 13 Collector's Edition, Disc 1, R1. Logs and .INF are below:

You're actually worried about 70MB? That's within the rounding figures... and is way to small to have any impact on output quality.

OvERaCiD23

Yes, that's a good 70MB. I've done hundreds of DVDs, all pretty much right on size (most with the Big3 up until recently). I see no point in wasting space that is available.

Great job with DVD-RB, jd...

I'm finding a bigger gap between desired and final outcome. I'm wondering the best avenue to close it. I've done 3 movies...all of very different sizes (for example Gahndi at 7.6 GB versus Dead Birds with 4.85GB) and each time I get a final DVD of 3.9 GB. I'm using DVD-RB 0.80 and CCE SP 2.7 trial. I used 4 pass on one movie and 2 pass on the other two.

I tried placing CCETargetSectors=2260000 (and TargetSectors=2260000 beause I saw that in another thread, too) in the ini file but still come up with 3.9 GB final.

I'm not sure how to proceed to close the gap.

Many thanks...

DVD-RB is never off by that much on a multipass CCE encode -- something is wrong. Are you sure you haven't selected OPV mode?

jdobbs
4th April 2005, 23:21
@OvERaCiD23

I may have found your 70MB. I went back and reviewed the code, and I wasn't accounting properly for saved audio/subpicture space in blanked extras. I noticed you'd used "Movies and Menus Only" mode. I've fixed it and it will be in v0.82.

aaron10
5th April 2005, 14:14
I do not have OPV checked in CCE options. The one larger movie I did was 4 pass and resulted in 3.9 GB, as did the smaller 2 movies doing 2 pass.

I will try another movie tonight to see if I can figure out why I'm coming up short. Anything in particular I might look for or examine to get to the root of the problem?

Thanks...

What's the version o your DGDecode?

aaron10
6th April 2005, 03:29
Currently, I have MPEG2Dec3dg.dll (version 1.0.1.0) in the Avisynth plugins folder. Do you think that muight be the problem? Should I delete it, using DGDecode instead? If so, should I place it in the Avisynth plugins directory or in the same directory as DVD-RB?

Many thanks...

Fishman0919

Try pointing to MPEG2Dec3dg.dll in DVD-RB set, on one of my machine DVD-RB works funky if I don't point to it.

Something like...

[Paths]
QuEnc=C:\Program Files\DVD-RIP\QuEnc.exe
Source=C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ADMINISTRATOR\DESKTOP\VIDEO_TS\
Working=C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ADMINISTRATOR\DESKTOP\FOLDER\

CCENEW=C:\Program Files\Custom Technology\CCE SP Trial Version\cctspt.exe
MPEG2DEC=C:\Program Files\AviSynth 2.5\plugins\MPEG2Dec3dg.dll

It might help

Yes... you should use DGDecode... use the one included on my installer or the one that jdobbs included on the ZIP file of version 0.80 Freeware.
I always put it on AviSynth's plugins (but I really don't use any other program that needs it :D) folder but you can pute it on Rebuilder's folder as long as you set the path correctly on setup window.

I'd recommend you put it in the DVD-RB folder. That way it won't interfere with any other implementations you have of DVD2AVI or DGINDEX. It will also prevent future problems when another program might modify the location of the AVISYNTH plug-in folder (as has been seen).

I may even force it to be there when I release v1.00 -- the use of incompatible .DLLs has been the source of innumerable headaches.

aaron10
6th April 2005, 15:20
I already put it there and designated the path in setup. We'll see how an encode goes later on today.

Once I get things ironed out, I will buy CCE Basic and make a donation.

Take care...I appreciate the program and the help.

I'll change the installer (on the next release) to make it so... I'll put it on a folder, under Rebuilder's directory, called Decoder... will this be fine?

keep it UP

Just put it in with the decoder (no subdirectory). No sense making a subdirectory for one file.

aaron10
7th April 2005, 19:30
Should the readme file be amended too? In version v0.80 (free) it still states

"MPEG2DEC3DG.DLL (or DGDECODE.DLL) installed (Donald Graft's DVD2AVI AVISYNTH plug-ins)"

That's why I went with Mpeg2dec3dg.dll: It was mentioned first in the readme.

JohnG
7th April 2005, 20:33
Definitely put dgdecode(1.01) in a separate file, but NOT the avs plugins folder. Point Rebuilder to the file so as not to have any mixups. I currently utilize all three decoder versions (dgdecode1.0, 1.2 and mped2decdg) in other programs for special circumstances and I have encountered problems until I moved them all into separate directories and made sure to point the application to the correct one. Also, only keep ONE of any decoder .dll on your drive in order to avoid confusion. Delete any copies anywhere else on your system.

aaron10
8th April 2005, 14:12
Boy, still no dice. I just did a 2 pass movie that was a bit over 5 GB and it ended up with a final encode of 3.85 GB.

I can't fathom what the problem could be. The proper version of DGDecode.dll is in place (DVD-RB folder), and the path is defined in setup. Everything seems to operate smoothly.

Anything else I can look for to ferret out the culprit? I installed trial SP 25 days ago. I'm not sure if it's time limited and will expire at 30 days, but I would love to get things operating well before I purchase Basic and get PRO RB, unless you feel that's the route to go at this juncture.

Again, the ini is...

@aaron10

What version of CCE are you using? I know it's 2.7 -- but is it 2.7.1.5 or the newer 2.7.2.0? There's always the possibility that something has changed in 2.7.2.0... I haven't tested that version yet.

Also just as a note. The value you have set for TargetSectors is being ignored -- it is overridden by CCETargetSectors.

@aaron10

I ran a job using the CCE v2.70.02.00 Trial version overnight. It sized correctly (4.32GB).

Getting CCE Basic is a great idea, though. I think it is very easily worth the $58 investment...

aaron10
10th April 2005, 00:18
Okay, first thing I tried to back up with my new combination of CCE Basic 2.7.01.02 and DVD-RB Pro V0.82 was Final Cut (a Region 1, Barnes and Noble acquisition). The raw DVD was 7.61 GB. I decided to try Movie and Menus Only (Blank Extras) for the back up. Output from the 2 pass encode was 3.79 GB.

I would be happy to send you the original DVD for experimentation, if that would assist you in the evaluation.

I don't think there's much to glean from the updated rb.ini but I'll provide it just in case...

aaron10, try uninstalling then reinstalling avisynth... and try removing CCETargetSectors=2264000 or TargetSectors=2264000... no need for both

aaron10

Uninstalled Avisynth 2.5; upgraded to Avisynth 2.55. Removed TargetSectors=2264000, leaving CCETargetSectors=2264000. Running Movie and Menus Only (Blank extras) again. Will report results.

aaron10
10th April 2005, 04:42
Exact same results from a 2 pass encode -- 3.79 GB.

It would be nice to have someone who has this movie (Final Cut), and a fairly similar set up, try a Movie and Menus Only (Blank Extras) encode. I had DVD-RB remove all subtitles except for English while leaving all audio untouched.

If it isn't the movie, I'm at a loss as to what is going on, especially since the results are duplicated size-wise with both runs.

Thanks...

I seem to be having similar problems with undersized movies, about 6 so far. The reason they are undersized seems to be that chunks of video are absent. Watching the film you get what seem to be video pauses where the sound keeps going but under closer investigation sections of video are just absent. I have only just noticed this and I have reinstalled apps and started things afresh to see if I can duplicate the problem. I have just been overwriting files when upgrading dvdrb versions so maybe this has created a problem with an old ini entry.

Sorry I don't have logs and such as I have had no problems for so long with rb since about 0.51 I took it for red they would be ok. This only seems to have happened in the last two weeks so if it is a rebuild problem then its in versions 80-82 i think.

I will get back to you all with more info once I have investigated.

I more than likely a setup problem at my end.

jdobbs
10th April 2005, 12:49
???? How many have you seen that have come out that way? Have you recently changed CCE versions?

RaistlinMajere
10th April 2005, 15:43
just tried it again and chunks of video are missing again. The resulting size is about 3.8Gb

using Rb 0.82pro

cce sp trail 2.70.01.05

avisynth 2.55

using the dgdecode.dll that is bundled with latest rb zips

been using this setup for a few months with no problems, the only thing that I have changed recently is the version of rb

If its any help I have only noticed the problem in the last couple of versions I can't be sure which. Does rb write anything in the ifo's so I can tell which version of rb created it?

It is not the rebuild stage either as I checked the m2v files in the working folder and the chunk of video is missing of the end of one of the segments or the beginning of the following segment, it is not a missing segment.

I am going to try the same dvd with 0.80 see how that works. I will report back hopefully with logs from both

just checked the progress of 0.80 on same computer and so far the V01000000001001.m2v is 194,688 KB where it was 100,623 KB and the V01000000001002.m2v is within a few Kb of what it was.

So for some reason video was missing from the end of some of the m2v files.

It might not explain the problem jdobbs but if I can give some clues it might save some time for you I hope, I am going to try the newly released 0.83pro on another computer with the same setup now to see how that behaves.

I've heard before of CCE bombing out in the middle of an encode. That sounds like what is happening here. Is your system overclocked?

The next time you do a job, before you start open up CCE and under OPTIONS/OUTPUT turn the logfile on. Then review it after the job is done and see if there are any anamolies.

System is running as a server so everything is set to the most stable values, running windows 2000 using wlhq'ed drivers for all hardware. Same setup I have been running unchanged for several months except for ms patches (but none in the last few weeks), never had a problem before. If i still have further problems I will reinstall the operating system to see if maybe something has become corrupt, but everything else seems fine so I am baffled.

Interesting, though, that Raistlin gets about the same size output as I have been getting, 3.7-3.9 GB. I wonder if something else might be going on?

I am going to try The Final Cut again but this time I will turn on CCE logging as you suggested JD.

Will post as soon as it is done.

aaron10 do your undersized dvd's have missing sections of video to account for the undersizing?

anyway the test with 0.80 had the same problem so I am beginning to think its my systems fault. Encodes on my other computer seem to be fine. I have reinstalled rb, avisynth 255 and removed and updated cce to cce sp trial 2.70.02.00. I have batched a couple of dvd's to run over night so I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow.

I don't know if sections of the video are missing. I just threw away the results each time when I noticed the undersizing. (I guess I could make another run and watch the results.)

When I ran The Final Cut through again (third time), I got the exact same results size-wise -- 3.79 GB. Three runs with this same final size. Whatever is going on does not appear to be random.

Oddly, though, I turned on CCE logging and each time I started CCE in a stand alone state it created a log file. However, when RB initiated the encode, CCE did not create a log file, even though the option was set. Thus, I do not have any results to report from that perspective.

I wish I knew what it could be, even if it is system related. My set up seems to be stable mabel in all other respects, so I'd love to know if there's a workaround.

Some questions which could be helpfull:
- Does this problem also happen if you use CCE 2.5?
- What is your hardware setup? My Athlon64 has some incompatibilities with some firewall software. Maybe CCE does use some weird instructions.

@aaron10,

Does your sizing come out correctly if you encode the entire DVD (rather than Movie+Menus)?
