First off here's the specs.

The Patriot R1 (All Extras And Audio Ripped except for DD5.1 producing a Avg bitrate of 2500. A bitrate of 2400 is suppose to SVCD quality so there is bound to be pixelation and artifacts.)

My computer is a 1.6ghz p4 with 256megs of ram.

DVD Rebuilder Pro v80beta
CCE 2.70.1.5
HC Batch v0.12
Avisynth 2.5.5
DGDecode v1.1.0

CCE, 4pass took 550minutes
HC, Best quality took 770minutes

The reason why I wanted to do this is someone told me that HC yield better quality at a lower bitrate. The people from CCE said that you will not notice any quality improvements after 4 passes so that's what I used as my minimum. Myself, when i do a encode I use 6passes just to make sure. I've viewed both these movies with a HD television so you will notice these things. In my finding I found the CCE one to be better quality at the high action scene pixelation was just less than HC. Even though HC did produce a high quality encode it just didnt compare. I guess that's why you would have to pay $2000 for a commercial encoder as to a free one.

But if HC was close to CCE quality, that's great considering it is freeware. I'm sure by version 1.0 of HC it will have at least some improvement in quality and the amount of time it takes to encode.

I think you have to use OPV for CCE to get better quality.
And, I think more different sources are needed and more different bitrates to conclude that CCE performs better than HC at low bitrates; but that's clear I think.
