View Full Version : v81 Skins problem

When using 'Windows Standard' or 'Simple Blue' skins, not all the fields are showing up in the setup screen. In this case, the path to HC encoder is completely gone, and the path to Decomb has no input field. It looks as if there is some 'overlap' of fields that covers the others... If I switch to Rockas original skin, they're all there. Hadn't seen this before. I'm running my (LCD) monitor @ 1280x1024 pixels. I've always preferred the simpler screens (it's what's under the hood that counts ;)), so hope this can be resolved.

That the punishment for the ones that don't use my "Skin" :D

Just kidding :) ... I think that jdobbs will read this.

edit: I think that jdobbs will read this... and fix it of course :)

Cut and paste the text below and replace all the text in the "Windows Standard.txt" file in the "Skins" directory. That should fix it. I've also added fixed it in DVD-RB and it will show in version 0.82.

Hopefully you've also fixed the "Simple Blue" skin...

if I'm not mistaken, the 'Windows Standard.txt' will format both the windows standard and simple blue (not at home, so I can't check it)

There's a separate "skins\Simple Blue.txt", and updating the "skins\Windows Standard.txt" only corrects the problem for "Windows Standard", not for "Simple Blue".

(I'm fine using "Windows Standard", and it looks easy enough to figure out the changes to "Simple Blue" if I wanted to use that. I just wanted to remind jdobbs that both needed to be updated for the next release.)

Yeah... it has also screwed up several other skins... I must not have had my coffee that day. I've fixed it so they will all work for v0.82.

This is to either jdobbs or Rockas. Not sure which. The issue is skin scaling when using 120dpi fonts in Windows XP (or "Large Fonts"... that also creates the problem).

The skins scale just fine but look horribly pixellated and blurry. I am sort of used to this because many application developers completely ignore the fact that some users run at high-resolutions and consequently beef up the dpi for their fonts. Some applications even have UI elements that don't show up entirely, I assume because they are programmed and set for absolute pixel sizes, not relative font sizes.

I think maybe the only solution is to include two versions of the skin -- one for 96 dpi (normal) and 120 dpi (large). Is it technically possible to do this in future skin/DVD-RB versions, or are there technical limitations? Maybe it would be enough to have two skin versions, Rockas, and Rockas-LARGE?

I made a test setting the fonts to Large and Rebuilder came up just fine!?!?

Where are you changing the font size?
I'm using the "Aspect Tab" under "Visualization Properties" (don't know if these are the names in english I have the XP Pro SP2 Portuguese.

Well... I finished my test...
There are perceptible distortions (very little) not as much as your images... could it be the Graphic Card? I have an ATI Radeom 9600XT 128MB...

About the two skins... that will have to answered by jdobbs... I can make it bigger but the program will probably get bigger too :)

edit: in fact... all the icons, on the windows bar, are worst :D

raddygast
5th April 2005, 23:02
Not my graphics card. I just changed it last week -- before I was running a Radeon 8500LE 128MB. Same exact look. Maybe the changes are exagerrated on 1600x1200 resolution?

Anyway, I will try Large Fonts mode (instead of resetting DPI size to 120) and tell you the difference; from your post it seems like using Large Fonts directly doesn't scale the skin.

But I hope you will agree this is definitely due to the increased DPI and the screen layout changes that that causes in the code. Not the graphics card.

Rockas
5th April 2005, 23:05
Yes... from the images you post I can see that your card isn't exactly an outdated one, so... it should be right.

yes... make that test and tell me how it came up.

about the icons on the windows bar... they sometimes go all weird and don't become normal until a reboot. Obviously running high-res in Windows is a pain, but I was just hoping something could be done to RB's skins because RB is the program I am currently using the most!

jdobbs
5th April 2005, 23:37
That's not a DVD-RB problem -- you'll have to talk to Microsoft about that one...

archaeo

I have the same problem as raddygast with the heavy pixellation in custom skins. In fact his screenshot looks identical to mine... I sort of wrote it off too, but it's one reason why I use the simple windows standard skin. It would be nice to see the pixellation cleaned up and see sharp text, but I'm not sure what the problem is - I don't seem to notice any difference in the pixellation when I use a lower resolution (than my usual 1280 x 1024).

raddygast
6th April 2005, 00:21
Are you also using Large Fonts or 120 DPI setting in Windows?

archaeo
6th April 2005, 00:59
yes

raddygast
6th April 2005, 01:01
Ok, Rockas,

I tried using "Large Fonts" and setting the DPI back to 96.

Well, it looks like Large Fonts doesn't actually change much except the titlebar on Windows. Or if it does change stuff, it certainly doesn't do as much as 120 DPI.

So yes, your skin looks fine at 96 DPI w/large fonts, but that's because the large fonts setting isn't doing anything to any element inside DVD-RB (including text). I.e. my DVD-RB window dimensions are much smaller, and the fonts it uses are smaller too. But the skin looks perfect (as it should) since it was designed for 96 DPI.

I'm gonna go ahead and switch back to 120 DPI, Normal Fonts, and if a fix ever comes along, I'll be happy. If not, it's not the end of the world.

Or I could keep it at 96 DPI, because in Thunderbird and Firefox you can define the DPI settings internal to those proggies. So things should be fine for the most part since RB and Firefox/Thunderbird are what I use most.

raddygast
6th April 2005, 01:04
Ok, I tried 96 DPI and Normal Fonts, and it looks like Large Fonts *WAS* doing something, because now everything is super-small. But still, DVD-RB was the same under both, so it isn't respecting the Windows large vs. normal font size setting. It seems to only go by the 96 DPI vs. 120 DPI setting.

I am having a hell of a time looking up this issue on the net, i.e. the difference between 120 DPI and just setting Fonts to "Large Fonts." Most of the links are for MS API developers.

Rockas
6th April 2005, 12:33
Ok... as soon as I can I'll try to make a skin 25% bigger and I'll give you a download link so you can test it, is that ok?

keep it UP

raddygast
6th April 2005, 20:31
That would be great Rockas. But don't go out of your way, it seems I am in the minority here and it's just a cosmetic issue.

On windows standad and simpel blue skin it works nice :)

It's been replaced by the HC path. You can edit it in the .INI file.
