According to forum rule 12, there is no such thing as "best". Your post is ill-formed and therefore cannot be answered.

I don't know squat about HDTV, so I'll just give you a couple of side advices:

-AGK is now 2.02
-AC3 rarely ever fits on 1 CD, so count at least 2
-XviD would seem better suited indeed to keep details in
-If you plan on keeping the high res, count more in DVD output size than CD size.

Other than that, as Auto-Gk is Auto-matic, I can see no reason to fret and I'd let it handle the stuff itself :)

So a more specific question - one I have failed to find - is if we look at PSNR data does AuotGK with HD content do about as well as "tweaks".

You are right - "best" can be subjective. BUt we can all agree XVID 1.1 beats out MPEG1.

AC3 2.0 is actually not THAT big - 192 - so Enterprise episodes look stunning reduced to 960x540 (from 1920x1080i) 24FPS progressive with the AC3 intact.

AutoGK )n their site) is 2.01b. Where is 2.02?

I currently encode my HD episodes (original 1920x1080i, AC3) down to 1280x720p, original AC3 @ 1100MB. 4 episodes fit onto a DVD and the video quality is awesome! At the cheap price of DVD media these days it seemed like the right choice.

THis seems reasonable. I think I have settled on 960x540 (direct multipleier at 768megs (6/DVD) for a number of reasons

1. The new DLP sets I want are 1080p thus the upconvert will not induce errors
2. Fewer resizing problems going to 1/4 rez.
3. TO be honest, I tink the 960x540@768megs looks better on my current 1080i set - fewer fast motion artifacts.

But I agree - I was clsoe to 3/DVD at 1400megs 1280x720p :)

I wish nero was easier to use - the AVC is awesome (but slow)
