Hi,
I attempted to back up a battered but playable DVD using DVDShrink and kept getting an error message before any processing started. I then went to plan B and used DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 to rip the movie to an external hard drive. I used file mode. Then I attempted to use DVDShrink again but got the message "DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Invalid data in the file ".....\VTS_01_1.VOB". The flick plays flawlessly from the hard drive using Power DVD XP. Any suggestions? What alternative software could I use to transfer the decrypter output to a DVD-5?
TIA

From what I've seen and read in the forums, your disc may be in such bad shape that Decrypter just can't get a clean read. Try cleaning the disc. All sorts of stuff is suggested, like using toothpaste, etc., but I'd start with a damp cloth. They say to start at the hub and wipe straight out to the outer edge, not to use a circular motion.

It might also be worth a shot to run an uninstall/re-install with both Shrink and Decrypter. HTH's....

Thanks Ammck55,
Is there another program that could correct errors in a given file individually so as to allow DVDShrink to do its thing? Can someone tell me why Power DVD XP can read DVD Decrypter's output and provide good consistent audio/video with errors? In other words, is there an alternative way to compress the files I have and put them on a disc that will play in my stand alone?

Well... If the files are already succesfully ripped on the external HD, it is not necesary to clean the DVD, don't you agree ammck55?
etrurian: Anyway, re-installing DVDShrink is a possibility... if still does not work, you will need to get a non freeware program, unless you already got another freeware transcoder... in that case, you will tell me which one. :p
If you have Nero, you can try Nero Recode. DVD2ONE, CloneDVD etc... are others possibilities.
Greetings! ;)

One of my first dvds i scratch when i put it in the dvd player wrong. (unfortunately had not made a backup of it yet).. i can rip that dvd with dvd decrypter.. but not exactly what id call succesfully (a lot of 'i' pressing needed) .. ive also had some dirty disks that with a little cleaning ive been able to get clean rips from.

as far as the scratched dvd... fortunately only the opening credits were effected so i just disable the first cell when ripping.. i refuse to buy it again! :)

That's what I was wondering--if the disc had, in fact, been successfully ripped by Decrypter. I've never had Shrink refuse files that have been run through Decrypter, but I've also never processed any of the so-called "problem" titles that you read of.

You can check the individual .VOB's in your software player that have been ripped by DVDDecrypter, but an easier way to check them would be to mount your .ISO in a virtual drive, such as Daemon Tools. Once the file is mounted, you can pull up the entire .ISO and run through all of the chapters with the player controls instead of just looking at one .VOB at a time. If your ripped files are valid, this would isolate the problem back to Shrink.

etrurian--What's the title that's giving you the problem?

Hi Ammck55, Castellamos, Trahald;
Thank you all for your responses. So far I've cleaned the disc with tooth paste and then with rubbing alcohol and reinstalled DVDShrink although I suspected that DVDShrink wasn't the problem because it performed flawlessly in processing another disc. The title that I'm having problems with is "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". Castellanos, thx for the word "transcoders" I didn't know what these programs were called. As a Nero user I have recode 2. Ammck55, can you give me a steer to info about Daemon Tools? Currently I have no idea how to use it. The disc is one of those that have standard on one side and widescreen on the other. I've used DVDDecrypter on both sides and have the same problem. Both versions play flawlessly using Power DVD XP as ripped to the external hard drive. Nero Recode 2 also reports errors and closes.

DAEMON Tools Website (http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/portal/download.php?mode=ViewCategory&catid=5). Once you install and load the program, it runs out of your system tray. Look in the root folder for the Help files.

With DVD Decrypter, try Tools/Settings/Device, put a checkmark next to "Set Read Speed" and try 1x or 2x... if it plays at 1x already, it should rip at 1x.

Very strange that you can play the files with PowerDVD but nothing with DVDShrink!
Did you try to trancode directly with DVDShrink using an "on the fly decrption program"?
You can try DVD43 (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd43.cfm) which is free. AnyDVD (http://www.slysoft.com) and DVD Region+CSS Free (http://www.dvdidle.com) work in the same way, but they are shareware.
