x264 realtime capture/encode?

Im looking into setting up a HTPC and i was interested in using x264 after the good impression its made on me archiving my dvds, but no matter what settings i disable i cant get it to encode realtime in 704x576, xvid manages this fine.

Is there any way of making x264 encode realtime without making it look like a low bitrate cinepak encode?

You are going to have to turn off all the advanced stuff and that may still not be enough. Almost no reffs. No Bframes. Very little ME. And even then it may not be enough.

Actually, at least in some situations (not sure about fastest settings), 1 B-frame (non-adaptive) can help speed. (Though in very high motion scenes, non-adaptive B are both lower quality and slower than no B, so to really make that work I'd have to add a fast adaption algo.)
To explain why this is so: B-frames increase the number of skipped macroblocks (which don't need motion estimation at all), and B-frames aren't used as references so I don't have to calculate the half-pel motion planes for them, nor run deblocking.

but I use a other way to cap straight to x264..
I use the FFDShow Encoder..

What capture software do you use? If you use VirtualDub or DScaler, you'll need to get the VfW version of x264 ...

Does anyone have some current x264 settings recommended for realtime encoding? I'm sure things have been optimized quite a bit more since this was first posted :)

(These would probably be used in ffmpeg or VLC by the way)

I'm also interested in this topic for dvb streaming, however if anyone has any tips, cmdlines (or more too the point - x264 settings), ideas, etc I think it would be good too share. I've tried using vlc on a q6600, however its hard too find the balance between quality and speed without knowing exactly what works fast, what is slow, and what you should use too retain at least SD quality.

I think many others out there would like too give this a go too .. as I think it is possible on a quad machine using multiple threads.
