Hi.
I've seen posts in these fora with beautiful screenshots of application windows. How are these things done?
Is there any freeware program that lets us capture the screenshot of a window (e.g., GK)?
Regards.

That function has been implemented into Windows since at least Win 95 (not sure about 3.x and earlier) ;)
The key "PrtScr" (right next to F12) captures the entire desktop into the clipboard, then you can paste it into paint or any other picture program.
The combination "Alt" + "PrtScr" captures the active window into the clipboard.
Then you just need to convert them to JPEG or GIF or whatever good compressing format, to keep the file size below limit (there is a limit for attachments here).
Or just upload it to some webspace and post the link to it.

Try ALT + PrintScreen, then paste it into Paint and save it as a .jpg (assuming you're using a PC with Windows).

But (iirc) you still need a tool like Hypersnap to capture DX / D3D and HW-Overlay surfaces !?!

I am not an expert like the other members of these fora. I don't know what are iirc, DX, D3D, HW-Overlay. I am sorry.

Yes, when you wanna capture the overlay, you need extra software.
That's a no-issue when you only wanna capture application windows, though.
I don't know what are iirc, DX, D3D, HW-Overlay.
IIRC = If I remember correctly / If I recall correctly
DX = DirectX
D3D = Direct 3D (part of DirectX)
HW-Overlay = Hardware overlay. Videos are shown using the overlay technique. I don't know how it works in detail, though, but it's like 2 different layers. The one with the regular windows desktop etc. and the one with the video. Then the video layer will be laid onto the regular layer and displayed, so you see the Windows desktop and the video. When you use the Windows snapshot function you get only a black area where the video should be, as it doesn't capture the hardware overlay.
When you disable hardware overlay (like in Windows Media Player), then Windows' PrtScr function will capture the video, too, as only the software overlay is used.

Well, it's rare that any of us receive "too much" information. :)
I was about to insert a link to a nice little freeware program that was my first screencapture app, HyperCam (http://www.hyperionics.com), only to find that it's not freeware any longer. Bummer! A 30 day demo is offered and I believe they're asking $39.95 USD's for it nowadays. HyperSnap can be located on the same page.

Yes, indeed, HyperCam and HyperSnap are both priced products now. But, with the screen capture capability now built in Windows (Alt+PrintScreen), who needs another application for screen capture? Capturing overlay, however, isn't natively done in Windows. There has to be a freeware, somewhere, for that purpose.

I use a freeware program called Printkey 2000 (http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2004-32,GGLD:en&q=printkey+2000) that is just fantastic for getting screen shots. You can crop images, copy to the clip, save as jpg or gif...
Hope this helps!

I've downloaded printkey510ef.zip (http://www.webtree.ca/newlife/printkey_info.htm) . Thanks very much.
Can it catch the overlay?
Regards.

PrintKey2000 can't save overlay, but you can turn off (partially) hardware acceleration in Control panel --> Screen properties (???) --> Settings --> Advanced --> Troubleshooting (???) to the D3D & DX level.
