What is reasonable with MPEG4 compression

Hello,

I am very new at this. I have Nero Recode. I have used this to compress some videos but only used digital one and when I played the video back on my pc with Nero I had a reflection of a piece of the video on the left with lines through it. I compressed an uncompressed movie only down to an 80min cd. Is this the problem? What is resonable compression to expect and still get a video that looks good on a DLP rear projection tv?

I have an LG rear projection TV and most of my movies look pretty nice when I connect my PC through S-Video cable. They look just like on a regular TV, not worse, but probably beter. The screen is 113 cm diagonal, pretty big, but everuthing looks good. Probably because the res is low for such a size (just 1024x768).

How much compression are you using? Are you forcing a 9gb dvd to a cd?

Whether a DVD movie will fit on a CD-R depends very much on the lenght of the movie and its compressionability - dark a low motion movies like e.g. The Others are much easier to compress that high motion movies like e.g. Saving Private Ryan.

If if you back up a high motion movie way over standard 2 hours duration, I would go for 2 CD-Rs back up.
But I would think that with ND AVC you should be able to do single cdr back up of majority of movies. It of cource also depends on the quality you require.

In my case I back up onto DVD-Rs, so I do not have to look at the final size anymore.
