The last record of strict scaling, I think, was Koepi saying that he would merge foxer's code if he had time. However, it's been a while and I don't think there will be much chance of that, seeing as how Gom rejected strict scaling as inferior to loose.

I have always thought that what made XviD superior to other codecs was its options. So, why not let strict and loose scaling exist side by side? Maybe this could be implemented in the next beta build of 1.1 =/.

Anyways, my tests have generally shown strict scaling to be superior to loose because it offers much better and more CONSISTENT picture quality at higher compressions. Also, it tends to spread quants evenly instead of letting them "fan out" as loose is prone to do.

I totally agree with that. XviD is about options, and I also think that the more constant quality of strict scaling helps some encodings.

It won't make it into Beta2, and I fear that Foxer needs to port the scaling himself - there were some bugfixes in 2pass2.c and I have no overview of what changed.

Cheers
Koepi

I'd like to see that. It does indeed work well for some things. Themore options to config the better.

no offence to the Xvid devs but they are not always right of course, like their apparent comment to Doom9 about B frames and animated content.

when people have actually tested it and found that in (atleast) some cases strict scaling works better then it should be an option, even if disabled by default. so lets hope to see it in a future version anyway. :)
