and while u guys are here, pls also tell me good settings for nero avc/h.264 for encoding action/scifi movies with fast action or just fast motion, like Kung Fu Hustle and Chronicles of Riddick and T3 (all from widescreen authentic dvd sources)! Pls tell about good quality!

I keep DVD picture size and AR, and start with maximum definition -AVC. 1 use 1Mbps for video and typically 192kbps for 5.1 aac and 128kbps for stereo aac. i start with:
rate control is high quality: 2-pass
decision quality is hq
maximum refernce frames: 2
max gop size is 200
maximum b frames is 1
use all the encoding tools
deblocking strength is -1
psycho visual enhancements: high
source material is chroma - for animated features, normal for standard movies

I cannot teel you whether it's good or not. setup is dependant so much on the source. I recommend visually look at the movie, select excrepts what are bright colour dense, having so much red (sunset), having rain, fast motion, strobo effect, underwater, dark (blue) night shot - so what may cause problems for AVC. Encode these 1-2min excrepts several times while tamering with the encoder setup to figure out the best parameters for your movie

You must use high deblocking (IMO in 2-4 interval) strength and chroma ...

ya, i was coming to that, for dvd movies, what deblocking is recommended, in minus, or in plus, i mean ,less than 0 or more than 0? i am talking when bitrate is around 1 mbps!

In Doom9 test, when he encoded Futurama, i remember i didn't use weighted prédilection... and others settings...

wpred on is always better for quality (or quality is never worst with wpred if you want ... lol)

in fact, i just have too use same settings, use blokcking +2 ???

P.S : too funny to explain you in english cause we're frenches we both :D

RV10 is good with anime because I think that RV10 use high strength for inloop: Anime is a special source type. If you like beblock = N for movie use deblock = N + 2 or more for anime ...

at 1mbps -1 or 0 should be enaugh for an average compressibility.
if you go over 1mbps at the same average compressibility then -2 or -1 should suffice.
i prefer to keep some small blocks here and there and have more details.
Btw i always go anamorphic and no resize.

In fact inloop for h264 is adaptative: deblock = 0 for quant 25 is the same than deblock = -1 for quant 24 for example (perhabs not true for values but system description is correct)

for very low quant (high quality) deblock is in practice desactived.

IMO you must find the best deblock level for you and don't change for other encoding (with high or low quality)

i encode awith high bitrate (over 2 mbps)

At that bitrates AVC is useless. Use Xvid instead.

G-Slide

i don't agree... xvid doesn't give the same quality...

Sharktooth

Ah well... xvid gives more quality than AVC at high bitrates... use search to know why :)

in fact, i prefer using Nero Recode, cause i encode with 2 audios bands and 2 subtitles (french and english) and with xvid, the way is to do en .mkv, who will never read ont hardware play, and AVC .mp4 in few months...

use mpeg4 asp (xvid for example) in mp4 : my siemssen player can play that at this time: KBV2 (http://multimediacom.free.fr/Video/KBV2.mp4) or SWIII (http://multimediacom.free.fr/Video/SWIII.mp4)

G-Slide a video codec has nothing to do with how many subtitles and soundtracks you have in the container. I'm a little bit sceptic avc playability on stanadlones. Even full ASP support read: 3 wp gmc is an issue today. Sadly siemessen is falling into this category. shuttle released a nice xpc w. dothan cpu - looks like a hifi equipment. You may put on geexbox and osmo4(gpac).

anyway mencoder/mp4iptools allows you mux into an mp4 several audio tracks, subtitle track possibly ttxt

Are you mad? XVid doesn't do anything once you've maxed it out at quant 2. And what quant 2 is varies depending on the source so madly. An anime episode might max out at 1000kps, an action film 1500kps. Boosting either of these up to 2000kps is a useless action, while with H.264 adding in extra bitrate actually DOES help the picture... Going about 25% over what XVid will use for quant 2 (insanely rough number) looks too good, imo (quants around 13-17).

From what you said, i should assume you dont understand the quantization process and what the quantization matrices are made for.
Try doing a xvid Q2 encoding with EQM V3EHR for example (ok it's an overkill but it's to demonstrate AVC cant reach ASP). No AVC codec can reach that quality.

And this is on anime, yeah?
Which is what I originally meant, but didn't really specify or elaborate on... ^^;;

Zombie mode this morning. Uguuu~

AVC has its own limits as every technology.
Over 2000/2500kbps the difference between AVC and ASP (xvid) begins to vanish until ASP retains more details than AVC...
High quality encode freaks are all waiting for AVC High-Profile and the 8x8 transform for that reason...

IMO ... lol

1) for same size MPEG4 AVC is always better than MPEG4 ASP (with H263 quantisation or all custom quant)

2) Difference between MPEG4 ASP and AVC is increasingly low if quant (quality) is increasingly low (high) for metric and visual test.

3) I think that MPEG4 AVC q0 is very better than MPEG4 ASP q1 with inter & intra [8 ... 8] matrix quant ... but size for these files are perhabs higher than the best lossless codec ... lol

4) MPEG4 AVC main profil can't use custom matrix but MPEG4 AVC high profil can. In fact MPEG4 AVC high profil seem (see doom9 test) very very better than MPEG4 AVC main profil ...

SirCanealot and what if... you start playing with intra and inter matrices, huh?
