Simple question, but not in the FAQs.

I guess it depends on what you call an MP4 tool. Is is just dedicated tools like mp4creator or mp4box, or generic tools that just happen to support MP4 output (Recode), or more generic like Graphedit (can write MP4 with the proper filters in a filter chain).

Going by bond's list, there are not very many in total (especially if you don't count the ones that are just wrappers), so we might as well make a compatibility list for all of them. As far as what I want in particular, right now --
Something like AVS2AVI would be fine:
- very simple to learn
- supports VfW and ACM for compression (DS ok too)
- can be automated
- free
The ideal is something exactly like VirtualDub, i.e. all of the above plus:
- clean, fast, stable GUI
- job control
- linear editing & preview (less important)

for encoding i would say the 3ivx filters, nero recode, propably videolan (didnt test it tough), maybe the mpegable tool too (as its also dshow based afaik)
than there are the two mencoder based tools (from doom9 and mezzanine), mencoder with the new libavformat patch might also output asp-in-mp4 relatively correctly from .avs, but surely no correct mp4 with avc
i already plan to clean up the list, eg split in muxing, encoding, editing tools etc and add some, just didnt find the time
