I'm building a HTPC and want to be able to rip my dvd to the harddrive, but only taking the main movie. I don't want anything else. I use dvdecrypter and dvdshrink to put them on a DVD blank right now. Will one of them work?

Dvddecrypter will work just fine.

How do I pull just the movie and leave the extras and other junk behind?

I use DVD Shrink for film only. It's very easy. Just read the guide.

I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to do but to pull just the movie off of the DVD...

Use DVD Decrypter > Select Edit from the menu bar > Choose Main Movie Only from the Edit submenu.

Depending on what you are trying to do from there, you will most likely want a working title set for the extracted movie. You can direct ifoedit to the folder where you extracted the movie and Choose Create IFOs or use Rebuild from within DVD Shrink to build the DVD structure for the movie.

Decrypt the entire movie in file mode with dvd decrypter then just use reauthor mode in shrink.

I've been trying that and cannot figure out how to direct it to the harddrive after when reauthoring it. What am I doing wrong?

I take it that you already have the movie you decrypted on your hard drive. So create another folder on your hard drive. Then in reauthor mode select the main movie title then under the compression tab remove any audio or subs you don't want then press the backup button and under the very first tab select the target folder you created.

Look at this guide.

Open Shrink, Click the Re-author button at the top.

In the drop down menu, navigate to the folder that houses the movie's VOBs.

The title (or titles) will appear. Drag the desired title to the left upper window. (There may only be one title and that will be your movie. If there's more than one title, choose the one with a time that would correspond to the movie's length.)

Click the compression settings tab and remove anything you don't want in the re-authored movie. Once done, press Backup!, decide where to place the finished movie (or go with Shrink's default), and then let Shrink do its thing. Once Shrink is finished, you're ready to play or burn your movie.
