Help to install Nero Digital Codec manually

I would like to play Nero Digital movies on pc' which don't have the Nero package installed. I know this is possible with FFDshow but I'm not too pleased with the playback.

I now that I need to register some DLL files *.ax files probably the files located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter.

And use commands like regsvr32 codec.dll and copy the needed *.ax files to c:\windows\system32\

Just can't make it work. I get an error like DLLregisterserver entry point not found

I would like to know exactly which *.ax files are needed to decode audio and video and what exactly to do ?

Hope someone is able to help me.

Nero Video Decoder CHECKS for your nero installation.
You CANNOT use it without Nero.

Well I guess I'm back to trying to make FFDshow decode it which people claims is possible.
I have only been able to achieve a rather jerky playback with FFDshow 2005-03-03.

Any recommendations ?

You don't have to install NeroVision package for using Nero Video Decoder.Nero Burning ROM package is enough.Only Nero Digital Parser works without having Nero installed.Nero Video Decoder and Nero Digital Audio Decoder don't work without Nero and unfortunately there's nothing anyone can do to make them work.

well burning rom is also bloatware, i think its good we have all these opensource alternatives:
- ffdshow as decoder
- haali's "matroska" parser, which also handles .mp4 great

latest media player classic can play nero's mp4 files, with ffdshow latest, except the vobsubs.

Which FFDshow version would that be ?

I'm using MPC. 6.4.8.4 and FFDShow 2005.03.03

neither ffdshow nor mpc support .mp4 on their own, you still need a .mp4 splitter/parser, eg the one from haali

Another route is Moonlight-elecard for a MP4 splitter and ffdshow for decoding - that is what I have been using and have had no major problems with Nero AVC videos.

Definitely second that. PLease Make the installation more scalable. All I use is Nero Burning and Recode for AVC backup plus Showtime which is definitely not my favourite player. PLease make decoding more open or make the Showtime better player (I would appreaciate DRC inbuilt and external subtitles support)

not to mention that simple fact that there's no other way of getting the nero filters than getting the nero pack(s) and unpack them from it ;)

my moonlight demuxer makes only a linear playback possible. no stream selection, no seeking, ... it produces just an immediate chill-out when i try. is it changed ?

In fact, I'm using it is we speak. just copy the ax file and place it somewhere you can preserve it during format c: and then load it next time. It has never worked for me while using win2k, but with winxp it works great. By the way, I'm talking about NDParser.ax and only that one. I use ffdshow for the rest of the decoding for both audio/video. The parser/splitter is all he needs, ffdshow will handle the rest much better than Nero audio/video decoder, trust me on this; ffdshow kicks major ass! It should incorporate the hali parser for *.mp4... that would make my day :D

I actually run WindowsXP.
I succeeded in registering NDParser.ax but I need FFDShow 2005.03.03 for NON sse CPU's since the machine I'm trying to play nero files on is a old Athlon Thunderbird and I don't think it's SSE capable.

Any help much appreciated ;)

the ffdshow cvs compiles from celticdruid and milan work great here with .mp4 (and nero's parser)

edit: actually the download page itself mentions it:

so better wait till someone makes a real cvs compile When using celtic druids versions, libavcodec works great for MPEG-4 video decoding in *.mp4, however, XviD doesn't. Do you experience the same issue?

Using FFDShow 2005.03.28 from the link you provided I'm now able to decode Video. Now I only need sound

Do I need some kind of AAC decoder ?

Hmm, I am most definitely going to check up haali tomorrow. Shouldn't that bug report be to JohnV though? After all, it's Nero that is buggy here :)

Do I need some kind of AAC decoder ? MPC has a built in AAC decoder, and the very same ffdshow has audio decoding support for ffdshow, it should be enabled by default.

Yeah I know. However no Audio.

The latest build from milan's site works for sure
