View Full Version : Decrypting w/ Decrypter NEC or Pioneer?

I'm looking to buy a new DVD burner. Since I only burn at 4X at max I'm really just concerned about read (rip) speeds.

I already have a Pioneer 108 but that's for another machine. The new one is is the model 109.

The NEC in question is the 3520.

They're in the same ballpark pricewise which makes it so much more difficult to decide.

Since I don't have either one, does anyone have pro/cons on one vs the other? From what I've read around, there are no firmwares out there for either one of these two so I'm comparing stock unit vs. stock unit.

Once again, I do not care for burning at 16X or 18X or whatever speed they are up to now, just read speed.

Thanks in advance.

If read speed is all you care for, maybe this can help.

Edit: Sorry haven't gone there in awhile, maybe got so up to date...

Pioneer and NEC have both traditionally locked dvd movie read speeds to a max of x2. so you would probably need to find a patched version of the firmware if you want faster reading.
