cannot play/convert dvdrip xvid

I have downloaded a dvdrip ac3.xvid. I've tried every player/ converter and installed every codec I can find and still nothing.
I opened it with gspot and it tells me it's not a valid avi file, I've dowloaded it again and I get the same problems. the file is a video clip but I can't seem to open it with anything. thanks for any advice. T:confused:
