XviD won't decode 4.4GB avi created with AutoGK in WMP

Hey guys, I am having a bitch of a problem here.

I have a 4400MB avi that I created with AutoGK. The audio track is the original AC3. I currently ONLY have the Xvid codec installed with AC3filter. This file, WILL NOT play in Windows Media PLayer yet all other Xvids play fine, including those with AC3 tracks.

I have tried everything, installing different codecs, uninstalling... etc etc...

The weird part about this is, the file plays perfectly in VLC.

Gspot reports the video as having 2 codecs, and audio having 1. When I try and run it through the renderer, the audio spits out fine but the video gives me an error;

"Some of the streams in this movie are in an unsupported format."

The other weird issue is that Gspot is only reporting the video to be 2GB, instead of 4.4.

Can anyone help me out here? I am at a complete loss!

OK...

I get an error trying to open the file with Haali's splitter. With Gabest, it won't play... it recognizes the movie (only the first half mind you) but sits there at 0:00 and won't play.

Any other suggestions? This all seems very weird considering I used Xvid to encode and again, it plays perfectly in VLC.

I have been doing some reading and this actually looks like it could be a limitation of avi files having a 2GB limit. Atleast, that's what a lot of people are saying. Something to do with an OpenDML standard.

The guy from Virtualdub talks about it here,

If I recall correctly, FAT / FAT32 have a file size limit of 2 GB. So in this case it's impossible to get to the avi index at the end of the file.

Make sure you use NTFS as file system. Oh, and your avi is for sure not usable anymore. Even if the file size limit is 4GB the file would be damaged due to the file sysem.

I can guarantee it's NTFS. I am running XP SP2. Upon further investigation with my PowerBook, Quicktime also thinks the movie is only half as long as it is (roughly 2GB, instead of the 4.4GB) so I am definitely leaning towards it being an avi file size problem.

why you would need to make a 4.4GB xvid file I have no idea....a bit excessive. Might I ask what you encoded, res, filters, matrix used.

you should try encoding straight to mkv or OGM

They are movies capped from an HD source, 1920x1080i, encoded @ 1280x720p w/ the original DD5.1 audio. Most movies are around 2 hours long. Regarding the Xvid profile, whatever AutoGK deemed best.

I have an HD TV and would like to maintain HD quality video. These movies looks very, very good and it is hard tell any difference between it and the original source.

4.4GB fits perfectly on one DVD, and having one movie per DVD is perfect.

I rip TV episodes too, same res 1280x720 but only rip them to 1.1GB (so 4 can fit on a single DVD) and they all play fine in WMP.

len0x has confirmed this issue for me, WMP can't play avi's over 2GB.

Hrm, I never got such problems with my 4.5GB encodes... :\

- MPlayer2 + the splitter from the quartz.dll = OK

- MPC + the splitter from the quartz.dll = OK

- MPC + the inbuild avi splitter = OK

I have no doubt it works in MPlayer (tested this myself as well), as well MPC but what about Windows Media Player 10?

anyone managed to split a 4GB+ .avi with Nan/VDub(Mod)?

I'm thinking of encoding some episodes of a TV series to a 4,480 MB .avi and then splitting it so that bitrate distribution among the episodes is best...

Hehe, gotta love it when this happens.

I don't really care about WMP 10 per-say, but rather the fact I use Meedio and have another MCE2005 machine in my house makes this awfully akward. Both these rely on WMP as their "engine", without support in WMP10 well... I might be SOL.

The avi splitter route seems like the right track. does anyone else know of some other splitters that might get the job done? Or is Gabest's and Haali's the only options?

In this case surely they work with mplayer2 as well?
After all mplayer2(WMP 6.4) is the very same as WMP 10 minus the stockings and suspenders...except it works of course ;)

I should have clarified what I meant/learned since then.

They all rely on DirectShow. Upon further investigation, it is definitely a DirectShow problem. When trying to load the file in GraphEdit, I get an error while the graph looks like so, GraphEdit screenshot (http://images.travisbell.com/misc/graphedit.jpg).

I am very, very confused at this point.
