I am currently using DVD2AVI (CCE 2.5 SP) and DVD Decryptor for my tools. I have read minimal info (here and videohelp.com) on VEGAS and DVD-A. Does anyone have any opinions on the use of these products? I mainly use my current tools for backing up my LEGALLY OWNED video collection. I have a young child who likes to destroy discs!!!!

Welcome to the forum:
Here's a couple of interesting links on the DVD-A format. For more reading material, run a forum search on "dvd-a", and stand back.

OK, let me back up a bit. Are you referring to the DVD Architect authoring app that's bundled within the Vegas+DVD Production Suite? If so, you need to explain your tools and intentions a little more clearly. The title of your thread includes "DVD Architect", but the body of your post refers to "DVD-A", which is the commonly accepted acronym for DVD-Audio.
Vegas 5 offers new integrations of 3D imaging and compositing tools, plus, what they refer to as a complete range of video and audio editing enhancements. If you're just starting out in video editing, you might want to take a look at something a little easier to work with, and affordable, like DVD-lab. If you've already gotten ahold of the Vegas Suite, pay no attention to this whatsoever....
One question mark is plenty. ;)

oh.....sorry about the confusion. I meant dvd architect. I am currently using dvd2avi and cce 2.5 sp, and am successfully backing-up my collection. However, I want to start diving in a little deeper and try working with a new tool for maybe editing. And yes, I can get a good deal on vegas and dvd architect (friend of the family works for sony). Curious what that combination would offer me and my needs.
thanks

Check out the Videoguys Real-time NLE's Review (http://www.videoguys.com/RT5.html). First up in the review is Adobe Premiere Pro, but you'll find the review for Vegas 4+DVD right underneath it. They list version 4, but not to worry, when you click on the "more information" link at the bottom of Vegas' section, all the information you'll find at that destination deals with Vegas 5+DVD.
I use PPro and haven't even looked at Vegas since a demo I had expired with little or no use, but WOW!, there are some eye-popping tools in the Vegas suite! While DVD Architect got mixed marks, here's a quote from the wrap-up that grabbed my attention...
...Vegas+DVD still has the best AC3 encoding and 5.1 support in the industry.
Be sure to click on the "NLE Q&A", it's on the first screenload. Good stuff in these articles, have some fun with 'em!.

If I can throw in my opinion, I think Vegas is a superb editing tool. I've been using it for the last year or so to put home movies together from my miniDV recorder, and it's superb. You have full control over fades, transitions, titles, colour balance, additional soundtracks etc...okay, it's not a complete beginner's tool, but it's reasonably easy to get into the basics, and it sure looks a whole lot better than the "Fisher Price" interface of Ulead's rival software, plus it seems a lot more stable to me.
