I downloaded the 1080p WMV9 Alexander trailer to test my new monitor and I'm not very happy with the playback. There is noticeable stutter and dropped frames. This leads me to ask a few questions:

What settings should I change on WMP10 to improve this?
What settings should I change on MPC to improve this?
I did a bit of searching and looked at the scrunch values in my registry and from what I can tell, post processing is disabled altogether. Here they are if you want to take a look:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Scrunch]
"CPU Clock Speed"=dword:000008a1 2209 decimal
"Post Process Mode"=dword:00000000
"Current Post Process Mode"=dword:ffffffff 4294967295 decimal

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Scrunch\Video]
"Resolution"=dword:0013501d 1265693 decimal
"BitRate"=dword:000003e8 1000 decimal

I'd also like to get my hands on some HD AVC samples (720p and 1080p in particular) to see how they play back. (I have nero showtime)

My specs are as follow:

AMD 64 3200+ (2.2Ghz) with Cool'n'Quiet enabled
1Gb of pc2700 ram
Geforce 6800GT (shouldn't matter since this is cpu bound)

PS: I know you like people to use the search and I did search. The only relevant thing I found was the registry thing...(I used show results as posts too)

Thanks for your time.

You must use "force Post Process Mode" and not "Post Process Mode". Use this little exe (http://multimediacom.free.fr/Video/WMVPostpross.exe) for Post Process setting

For best quality: use PP1 or PP2
For best CPU ressource: use PP0

Alexander trailer playback is good for my old celeron 1.5 Ghz with PP0 ... :)

No, that didn't help.

Still looking for answers to my other questions too. What about those AVC samples? Anyone?

How bad was the stuttering? Was it constant? Or did it happen on just high motion areas? Since this is a download etc and I know that the codec can be set to drop frames. It may just be that the codec discarded the frames in order to keep from blocking badly in order to stay within the given bitrate. A totally plausable scenario for a download. I could be totally wrong here though. Have you talked to others to see if they had the same issues or not? As for the AVC HD stuff I am not aware of any avalible. I could have blender output 720p and higher stuff. In fact I have. It was not spectacular since I am not a pro. But it was decent and played smooth. X264 encoded ofcourse. :D

Did you ever check whether your graphics card has enabled fastwrite? That was the problem with me. You should be able to set this up in the bios. To check you can use Rivatuner.
Did you install the latest driver from nvidia?

I have nearly the same setup (Athlon 64 3500+ , geforce 6800gt) and everything is working fine.

What the heck, it even plays on my dual athlon 2400+ with a radeon 9700pro...

works

I checked the Alexander 1080p trailer aswell and it always stutters in 3 or 4 places, otherwise it runs perfectly. It seems that all trailers that have DRM will stutter in specific places. Could it be that in those set places the player checks the validity of the lisence and therefore consumes more CPU power momentarely that causes the stutter?

3Ghz P4 and WMP10 + PP0.
