And still have questions.
Lets say I rip a VOB from Finding Nemo. I open it with VLC and measure the image size: 852x480. Which is pretty damn close to 16:9.
I run VOB through autoGK (out-of-the-box-settings): Open avi with VLC and measure the image size. It's 720 pixels wide. (This made me think I'm losing stuff, more on that later)
Now, when I look at the properties of the original VOB using various proggies, they all tell me it is 720x480 AND 16:9. Which doesn't jive. So I dig around, google and finally *THINK* that this is due to the Pixel Aspect Ratio in the VOB. Namely it's not 1:1 but, as autoGK log tells me is 1.18.
FWIW:
I'm autoGK'ing movies to watch on an Panasonic ED Plasma. Which I've determined has square pixels, and has a resolution of 852x480.
Playing the original avi's (720 wide) on a modded XBOX the 'original size' setting results in black borders around the display. The xbox can of course stretch to 16:9, but I'd prefer to let the Plasma do the scaling as I think it's circuitry is better (certainly newer).
So I re-autoGK'd and forced the width to 848 (nearest multiple of 16 to 852). And am pleased with the results.
My question? Is forcing width to 848 better/no difference/worse for my case?
Just curious, like I said I'm happy with the results and my eyes are the final arbiter.
autoGK is a sweet proggy I'm thrilled to be able to keep DTS/DS5.1 tracks intact while reducing size on disk.
