Hi,

i got a problem playing back NTSC dvd's on our PAL tv...
our dvd player does have a converter, but still the screen keeps "rolling" (you see the movie like 3 times through eachother),
now i'm wondering how i can do something to make it work (because my parents don't want to buy a new tv yet  )....
me myself came up with a couple of idea's:
1. get one (very long) s-video out cable to plug in my computer (upstairs) and on the other end into our tv (downstairs)... and then playback it from the computer....
2. use our laptop with tv card, plug it, which has a s-video connector, connect it to the tv and play from laptop to tv, but in the guide it says it's video-in, so can it be used as video-out?
3. isn't there a hardware solution, like some small thingy that you have to plug between the dvd player and the tv to fully convert it to PAL (as i said the dvd player does that also but it's called Modulated PAL, so because it's not "complete" PAL (i assume) i think it doesn't work)
4. convert the dvd's myself, but then i would like to keep the menu's and everything on it, so everything has to be the exact same size, or else it won't fit/i'll get crappier quality....

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Best thing is to buy cheap DVD player that can play NTSC as PAL. I know for sure CyberHome 300 can, Ronin, Daenix and many others. Try before buy, bring DVD disc to store (I assume you are in Europe) and see if it plays correctly.

So you mean one that converts it to PAL?
Our Pioneer dvd player does that too, but as i said it's Modulated PAL...
i don't know what's the difference....
But, you think these cheap dvd players will convert it to "full PAL" instead of the Modulated version??
Thnx in advance!

Difference between PAL & NTSC is that PAL has 625 lines, 25 (50 Hz, 50 fields, interlaced) and different colour coding (Phase Alternating Line) from line to line. Sound carrier in video signal is also different (5.5 MHz) and colour carrier is the same 4.43MHz.
NTSC has 525 lines, 30 frames (60HZ, 60 fields interlaced) and no phase change in colour coding from line to line. Sound is @ 6.5 MHz (USA).
DVD formats are different. MPEG2 (DVD) files are digital. Only difference between PAL & NTSC is frame rate. If it is 25 fps (frames/s), than it is PAL, if it is 23.677 than it is NTSC Film, and if it is 29.97 fps it is pure NTSC. Both PAL & NTSC could be Progressive (no fields) and Interlaced. Sound is given from another substream, so it is not important.
Most PAL DVD players could play NTSC with no problems, just dropping some frames or speeding it up a little in case of NTSC Film. Other way around is bit more complicated, but I know for sure that cheapos are doing it. I live in North AMerica and have some PAL DVDs from Europe that i watch with no problem. I know for sure that my friends with Sony, Panasonic or JVC could NOT do that, even if the region hack is applied.
I hope it is not too much for you...
Now, back to TV. If you play NTSC material on PAL TV you should not have colour and picture may be instable. If you have colour and picture is rolling, I bet you something is wrong with your TV or converter. If you remeber, before when TVs didn't have video in (I take yours doesn't), there was special channnel caled AV to watch VCR in. Otherwise, pictur would dither at the top. Try that, if not, show this to your parents.

"MOMMY & DAD, buy your boy new TV or DVD player, maybe report card would be better next semester." :p

Yes, there is a hardware solution, but it costs much more than good quality, multinorm new TV.

You can convert DVD's, but it's not simple, and you will spend money on recordable discs. Plus time, what IS money. Forget menus, instead bothering go and make some money :D

Hi jojo15,

What make and model of TV and DVD player do you have?

It could be that your TV does not support NTSC or PAL60. Or it could be that your TV does support NTSC or PAL60 but your DVD player can't output it.

Cheers

First off...
thnx to you all for replying, i got a lot more insight into it all...
then to answer SeeMoreDigital's question:
We have a Nokia tv (you need to know exact type?), which is quite old, ie. from 1998 or even older...
We have a Pioneer DV-343 dvd player -> this box here (http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005B9AC.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg), which is also quite old, from 2001 if i'm correct...
And something i was thinking of to add:
my own little crappy 14" tv CAN playback NTSC dvd's but in the manual it says it has a build-in NTSC-converter.. so maybe that's the difference which corrects this so-called Modulated PAL which the Pioneer makes from it....
And @ maksa: you are correct, when the screen rolls and everything there is no colour indeed....

If another dvd player can make the difference (if it's even possible with the tv) i would very much prefer that option because they are cheap indeed!

I hope to see your replies to this and thnx again! :p
