View Full Version : How to set PUOs in VOBs?

Sometimes it's not recommended to clear all the Prohibited User Options (PUO) of a VOB stream.

Ifoedit can only set PUOs in IFOs but not in the whole menu streams.
PgcEdit can set PUOs in IFOs, and can selectivly clear the PUOs in ALL PGCs of the menus and titles (Utilities -> Filter PUOs)

How can I edit the PUOs of menu streams, and not clear?
Would be a nice feature for PgcEdit. :)

Manually with VobEdit - it's a pain.

Start pgcedit.
Open a pgc (double Left click or hold right button and select "Edit PGC")
Click on the "..." button to the right of "Prohibited User Operations".
That will open the PUoP edit window.

It should work for any kind of PGC (menu, title, ...)

Because all PUOPs work in "logical OR" mode, the only reason I can imagine to set PUOPs in a VOB stream instead of an IFO is to do it only in part of a PGC, which you cannot do in the IFO. Is there other one?

@iliketowatch
PUOs can be set in the ifo and/or the vob files. pgcedit will only edit the ifos i don't think it will edit them in the vobs.

@frank
i know vobblanker can clear them in the ifos and the vobs but that's not what you want. you can try using DvdReMake i know it has an option to set(edit) the PUOs but don't know if it edits them in the vobs. i only tried the trail version.
sorry maybe VobEdit is the only free one you can use.

Check this (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=86318) out.

This (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=86062) was the original discussion thread that led to the app.

I agree with jsoto though. I can't think of a reason why you would want to set PUOS in the vob, since you can do that easily in the IFO on a PGC basis. The only reason is if you want to add a PUO on a cell by cell basis, but what's a good reason for that?
Maybe so you can press Next for a menu intro but not for the main menu that sits in the same PGC?

As jsoto pointed out, PUOs can also be set in VOBs and will be ORed together.
But, wouldn't setting the PUOs in the PGC still have the desired effect of adding a PUO (unless already set in the VOB, which would have no effect) since they are ORed?

I also remember when I use "Filter PUOs" from the pgcedit menu, it sometimes asks, at the end:
"At least one Title has the 'Time Play or Search" prohibited in VMG Title Play Map Table

Clear this prohibition for all Titles?"

Are these also ORed? Mainly curious. THanks for the new info, folks.

thanks blutach wasn't 100% sure that DvdReMake edited the vobs too. how do you remember all these post? are you a machine?:)

BTW why is it not recommended to clear all the PUOs in a VOB? i always do.

well, for example I think it can pose a problem in a menu where you're not supposed to exit until you actually select and activate a button. In most DVD, where you find yourself at a menu, you can't use the Next button. I bet that in your backups you can, and strange things happen!
Another thing is allowing fast-forwarding through menu intros etc. It's usually not allowed (I think I remember the IFOs are missing some tables for that?), I wonder what happens if you try it!

@sweetness - not a machine but did remember seeing something not so long ago and so used the search button :D

@jeanl - it is actually a good thing if ther menu is "stuck" to be able to use next and previous. I found it an excellent tool in recent tests.

My underdstanding is that there can be some unintended consequences if you always clear VOBs of PUOs - eg I saw a thread where the poster had the camera angle icon displayed on his player because he had cleared the PUOs in a multiangle program (not sure why, but it worked again when he ripped without clearing them).

Having said that, I have never experienced a problem when clearting VOB PUOs when ripping.

Maybe mpucoder can opine on this and educate us all further :)

Yes, but it can lead to navigation errors. If the menu isn't supposed to be exited without a button being activated (for example if the navigation relies on a GPR to be set) the navigation could break!

AH! This has happened to me (a backup that pops a camera angle icon once in a while)! I think I understand now. I'm guessing this is in parts of movie where there are interleaved video units that are normally accessed via selecting the proper PGC, but if you disable the corresponding PUO in the VOB file (and the IFO), the player will let you switch between angles (and pop the camera angle icon) on the fly! That explains it! This happens for example in my version of "The incredibles", and I'm guessing the various angles correspond to various languages (for newspaper headlines etc).

In my case I cannot change or switch on a subtitle stream (director's comment) in the title because the language menu was deleted. I have to reset that PUO in the VOBs. But other restrictions should not be touched (calls to non-existent menus etc.)

@frank

Deleting a language menu should not stop you from using the subtitle button on your remote.

In some players (my NAD for example!), if you have stripped stream 0 and have it disabled, while keeping stream 1 (assume there are no others), the player may not want to get off stream 1 after you have it on - and with no menu to help you, you are stuck.

The solution here is to enable stream 0, even though nothing is in it!

Yes, I know that issue.

In my title stream the PUO for CHANGING subtitle settings is disabled.
No way to switch on/off subtitles with remote.

I have a Philips DVD player.
