probem: Some DVD's will play on my PC and some wont.
symtoms: On the none playing dvds when entered you can hear the drive start and it will run a minute and then you can hear it hunting. I get no error messages either. It acts like a bad disk or something. Other DVD's play fine. So far it seems like certain studios dvds. Could this be some kind of copy protection crap?
I have installed and ran Windows Media XP Video Decoder Check Utility and it says that Intervidea is my default DVD player. I also have tried playing the dvd using Xpack but when the pproblem dvd is inserted it basically busies out the drive as you can not access it.
I have fought with this for 3 weeks and have reached my limit on it.

Working DVD's : Spider Man, Spider man 2 .
Non working: Xmen, Xmen 2, Kung POW.
Hardware: Intel MB D865PERL (Latest Bios P21) , Intel CPU 3.0Ghz Prescott P4 HT 800fsb, 1G DDR3200 Ram, ATI AIW9200 AGP Video card, WD 250GB SATA drive, Sony DRU710A DVD DL Burner.
Software: WXP SP2, ATI Catalyst 9.03, WinDvd Xpack, WM10, Macafee VS 9, Nero 6 . (All Software updated).

Please help me.

hmm. if you've got an old DVD-ROM drive lying around, try them on that.

it's possible that the discs that work are manufactured by Sony, and the ones that didn't are made somewhere else (you wouldn't think it'd make a difference, but there's plenty of cases of Sony standalones only playing Sony discs - i'm talking commercially pressed, 100% compliant discs here, too. it's a horrible thought).

try contact the authoring house that did those discs, and inform them of the problem - they may not be able to solve it, but at least they'll know that this playback issue exists, and hopefully solve it.

but it could just be your drive is finicky and doesn't like those discs.

BTW, what region are these discs? the different regions are all pressed in different plants, after all.

That is the very reason I do not buy anything made by sony. They like to control everything
