no matter what settings i try i keep getting tons of artefacts
with all builds!
even though the avs source looks nice

well,now i'm trying to encode naruto's 9th episode

here's my avs script:

the halos yet lack of sharpness and noise is gone
the filter pass looks just fine
yet the xvid encode looks shitty no matter how high the bitrate is

using the newest build from kopie

this shouldn't be so blocky shouldn't it?

i just dunno what to do....i've fellowed lots of guides yet i get blocky results....i think i'ts more then the settings
could it be that xvid actually hates me? :)

You did not say the bitrate you aim for...

Also, try Cartoon Mode 'Off' (although you don't use GMC, but it's worth trying)

i totally forgot about bitrate :) aim=700
the sample i encoded came out as 3000 but it still looked blocky and had a lot of ringing...now i wonder what whould heppen with 700

i don't think it's a problem with my settings cause they seem fine enough

Do you use one-pass or two-pass encoding?
Try H263 instead of MPEG matrix. Who knows? It could help against ringing...

Also, from the avisource and "naruto" i derive you are trying to recompress a video that was already compressed with a rather complex codec before (xvid, wmv9..).

While the filtered video may look very good and artifact free, there are hidden problems with this. Of cource this also applies to DVD backups, but i guess it is getting worse with the complexity and compression factor of the codec used in the source. If the source is also mpeg-4 based, the macroblock boundries could be the same at least, but with all the filtering you are still guaranteed things like motion vectors will be assigned differently than in the source. This kind of stuff makes the required bitrate grow. Also, it might be your filters make the source more complex than it was - sharper, the quantisations in macroblocks are smoothed out and then on requantising on encode they will be quantised differently etc..

PS: i wouls also go for h263 "matrix". I almost always use that one for anime (from DVD tho) and i think the standard mpeg-matrix is really not suited for anime - unless you have a very clean source (not filter-clean, but natively clean) and aim for a pretty high bitrate.

I have to state the obvious, simply because I have had it happen a few times when trying different codecs out.

Before you install a different xvid codec build you must uninstall any other xvid codec, preferably via the add remove programs part of windows control panel, as sometimes odd settings or files related to the old one can be hanging around.

When that is the case you can have installed a new version but still, without realising it, have windows using the older versions dll`s or settings data.

Okay it is obvious, but if you install over the top of an existing version it won`t always do what you expect.

cartoon mode is good with animes
and i did a filter pass so i get all sorts of small noise in the filter pass that should be removed by cartoon mode

it was the MPEG matrix
it looks better now though i still have blocks cuase i re-encoded it from 800 bitrate to 700

Of course, it was made for that. :D
The problem was that recent XviD 1.1 builds got a bug when using cartoon mode (in addition to GMC, iirc)...
So that was worth trying it (in fact the bug did not affect all the encoding, just some particular frames/scenes...)
