removing vocals from songs

Is there a program that can remove the vocals from a song so that all you have left is an acoustic version of the song.

There are a variety of programs, mainly VST and DirectX plugins that do this with varying amounts of success. Most remove all or most center material, since that's normally where vocals are located in a stereo mix. Unfortunately, this also removes bass and drums in many cases. Adobe Audition (formerly Cool Edit Pro) does a much more sophisticated job by filtering frequencies, etc., but it's also $299 US!
