How can I make lets say 44100Hz 40kbps mono VBR lame audio in VirtualDub (not in the list), in other words can I edit the list of possible conversions and make VirtualDub use mine? Or can I first compress the audio with lame and the add it to video?

44100 kHz 40 kbps VBR mono is a little bit weird of a setting (it will sound horrifying). You can mux MP3's to AVIs with VirtualDubMOD or AVIMux GUI
