View Full Version : I'm getting Artifacts in the movie

Usually I encode with xvid and have just tried to encode to SVCD for the first time, but I'm getting a lot of artifacts in the SVCD. I have used dvd2svcd 1.2.2 build 3 and tried both TMPG and CCE. With CCE I have both been using CBR and Multipass VBR (4 pass), but with artifacts in all of them. I have tried to follow the doom9 guide, but obviously I've been doing something wrong. Does anyone have an idea what the reason might be.

Hi & belated welcome to the board,
in order to help, people would probably need more information, such as source material, aspect ratio, length of movie, bitrate/no. of discs ... (most/all of) this information would be contained in the logfile, btw.

Thank you for your reply, I'll remember that the next time. I did find the problem though. For those of you who might be interested the problem was in the program making the cd-image: VCDXBuild. So I just changed image program to VCDimager and it worked fine, but I could just get it to make permanent subtitles. I couldn't find I-author, so I had to find something else, and found VCDwizard which does excellent job.

the problem was in the program making the cd-image: VCDXBuild. I believe you're wrong... VCDXBuild is a very proven builder, and it is a CD-image builder. MPEG artifacts are usually related with encoding.
Where do you see the artifacts? Playing a burnt CD in a settop? Does the image (mounted with daemon-tools or other virtual CD SW) play fine in powerDVD?

I agree with you. But I don't get the artefacts when using VCDImager or VCDWizard, why I don't now. I even tried VCDXbuild again after using VCDWizard and VCDImager just to be sure, because it does seem odd, but again the result had artefacts. I'm sry I don't have the original log anymore as it has been written over.
I have mounted the image both with deamon-tools and alcohol, and in both cases the artefacts are present in both powerdvd and media player classic. Of course it didn't help to write the image to a cd, but I had to be sure, even though it seemed stupid.
Why I suspected VCDXbuild is because I tried to play the mpeg-2 stream with and without subtitles, and no artefacts were to be seen in either case. As the subtitles are the last to added, it had to be the cdbuilder. When I changed cdbuiler the artefacts were there no more. So it couldn't be the encoding, which is what I suspected in the first place, as it hopefully is clear from my first contribution.
The artefacts are horizontal squares mostly in black, but sometimes in grey or red. They seem to be in places with both no motion and high motion.
I have a log from a movie made in exactly the same way, but without VCDXBuild or VCDImager, as I now use VCDWizard. It properly won’t help, but maybe it will. The VCDXBuild settings were does recommended by the doom9-guide.

I have an AMD 2500+-M CPU and 4-bit bios, so the CPU is not being recognized properly. Maybe that’s the problem even though it has never been a problem before, but that’s just a shot in the dark.
Please excuse my English I don’t use it as much as I should.
Best regards

Well, I'm lost. No idea what is happening in your case... I rarely use subs in SVCD (my settop does not like them), may be I can do some tests...
